Out with the old
Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that this is the first day of a new year and a new decade. At the beginning of each year I have several rituals that I go through to help me jump start the year. I function so much better when things are organized. I've cleaned the house, done laundry and now it's time for my much dreaded but much needed closet organizing.
I can generally tell how busy and crazy my life is by looking at my closet. The end of 2009 was very busy therefore, my closet is reflective of that. Now, my plan was to clean my closet today but time just got away from me. I will try for tomorrow.
When I step into the closet to begin there are a few questions that I will need to ask myself. I'm happy to share those questions with you as you may be getting ready to clean our your closet too and may benefit from asking them to yourself.
Here we go:
1. Why am I keeping this item?
2. Where would I wear it?
3. When would I wear it?
4. Would someone ask me for it? If so, who? Maybe I should just give it to them.
I already know that there will be some items for which I'll have a couple of excuses. I'll say "this was expensive" and "I'll wear this when I drop these last few pounds." Mind you, I used these same excuses last year and the year before. This year I'm just going to "let go" and get rid of those things that I have not worn.
Actually, now that I am writing about cleaning the closet I am getting excited about the thought of a nice clean and organized closet. I'm looking forward to packing up the summer items and bringing out the winter clothes and boots. Why don't you join me and work in your closet too?
