Olivia is more than just the former first lady of G-Unit. Possessing raw talent with an undeniable sense of confidence and perseverance, she‘s also a gifted singer, producer, & songwriter. With a new mix-tape releasing this month and an album later this year, Olivia is now ready to reintroduce herself to the world and prove all the naysayers wrong.

Bursting on the scene in 2000 with her self-titled debut album, Olivia was initially signed to J Records by the legendary Clive Davis who has molded the careers of superstars like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. As a superstar in the making herself, Olivia has worked tirelessly since her departure from G-Unit. Touring overseas, pursuing an acting career, and working on her new album and mix-tape, has kept the motivated songstress busy.

HDF caught up with Olivia to find out what makes her stand out from other r&b singers, the details of the new album, and her views on dating within the industry.

So Olivia, new album, new management, it’s a new era for you. How are you feeling?

Everything is really good and in the right place. I always believe there’s a time and place for everything and that everything happens for a reason. Rich (current manager) and I met through a mutual friend and that’s worked out really well. He works just as hard as I do and I don’t have to tell him what needs to be done. And he hasn’t tried to change me as an artist. People in this industry try to change you as an artist and not let you be who you wanna be.

And that leads to my next question. There were a few things that were written in some of your previous interviews, where you said in the past you didn’t have a lot of creative control. But this time around do you feel everything is more of a reflection of the real Olivia?

Definitely. It’s 100 percent Olivia. At first it was, maybe, 35 percent because I had to do what they wanted me to do in both of my previous situations. I couldn’t just sing because there were a lot of politics involved. A lot of people just didn’t get it. They were wondering what happened.

Exactly.

But I’ve been constantly working since those situations. I’ve been touring overseas. I did the whole album over to get new material. I really feel like it’s my time. I don’t feel like I was supposed to break out with G-Unit. I think it was supposed to be a learning experience. I was fresh out of college at the time and I’m still learning about the politics. I don’t regret any of it.

So, what did you learn about yourself and the music business while you were with G-Unit?

I learned that I could handle my own amongst all the rappers and the turmoil but I also learned about the dirty politics. And basically like I said in some of my previous interviews, G-Unit didn’t know how market R&B. I can’t fault 50 for that. He was working with a formula that worked for him as a rapper, but it doesn’t work for R&B.
