I Miss Old School Hip Hop

I was listening to the urban radio station in the car along with my 14 year old son and 11 year old niece. They played a few songs that I really like, that were not so bad.....BUT, then a particular song came on that shocked me (and I'm not easily surprised!!!). A rapper named Plies, a song called "Bust it Baby pt 2". As I sat and listened to this "song" at 3:00 Pm in the afternoon, I was shocked that was being played. I asked my son later, what did he think Plies meant when he called the girl ,"wet wet". My son shrugged his shoulders and stated, "It's just a song, Mom. we don't listen like that!".

Remember the early days of Hip Hop? When we hung on every word that Salt and Pepa said? We even knew the dances from the videos! How about when Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince had us playing "Summertime" at our cookouts? Even NWA and their controversy over "F*** tha Police"......at least it was truthful and was not played on the radio. I know our parents had an issue with rap even then, but its nothing like it is now. I am sad to think that intimacy in a hip hop song is what we hear from artists like Plies, as opposed to LLCoolJ's,"I Need Love". I feel like the younger listeners are missing out.
I know that times change and music only reflects society, but I still miss the old scholl hip hop.

Boy, do I agree..my son just cut a CD with the track ..Murda the "N" word" and it has that old hip hop flavor, because he grew up listening to "Chic" "Rappers Delight"
"Rolls Royce" in between jazz and the influences are there..I hear you, and you are so right! I loved Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff...
