Free Blacks voted in South Carolina in 1701 and 1703, People who did not like the way the election turned out protested by saying aliens had voted French prostants , strangers, paupers, servants, and even free Negroes. In 1703 they added Jews to the list . It wasn't until 1721 that a law was passed to limit voting to 'white and christians. Some blacks still slipped in because they were christians.
Elizaeth Freeman, born in slavery about 1742, won a case against her master. She left her master's house after she was struck in the face with a shovel, got a lawyer, a Mr. Theodore Sedgwick abd asked to augure for her freedon. She was set free and awarded damages. The Bill of Rights was used in her against her owner.
