Identifying Your Support Team

Whose On Your Support Team?

A life teacher once told me that everyone needs a support team. This includes individuals, groups or organizations that can directly provide you with assistance or help you gain access to resources and opportunities - or just be there when you need a shoulder to cry on.

Whose On Your Support Team?

Emotional Supporters:

Emotional supporters are there when you need them. They are the people with whom you can openly and honestly share both your pain and your joy. They will listen without criticizing you or judging you. They also seem to know exactly when you just need a hug or when you need a kick in the bottom. Emotional supporters may be your best friend, significant other, sibling, parent, grandparent, pet, mentor, boss, therapist, support group, coach, counselor, 12 Step Program - or maybe even the barista at your favorite cafe.

Spiritual Adviser or Spiritual Muse:

At times in life we need to be silent and listen to the guidance and love from the universe. For some of us that is a belief in a God or Higher Power. For others it may be a strong connection to serving others or doing good works in the world. Spiritual advisers and spiritual muses support us as we express our spiritual or religious side. A spiritual adviser or muse may be a person or place. It can include a religious figure or leader in our place of workshop such as a reverend or rabbi. Or it may be a quiet place in nature or an uplifting piece of music. It may even be a daily practice of yoga or meditation.

Benefactor and Financial Coach:

Whether you need $20 or $20,000 this supporter is the person you go to for financial assistance or advice on all things having to do with your money. They may be specific individuals in your life, professionals or financial institutions and organizations that you trust and with whom you have built an ongoing relationship. These are also people you can go to on the occasion when you need a warm meal, clean clothes and shelter to help you get back on your feet.

Information Gatherers:

These are the entrepreneurs, the "jack of all trades", researchers and bookworms in your life. These are the people, companies or organizations you can go to for practical advice and information. This might include such people as your health care providers, lawyers or legal resources, professional groups, community groups, meetup group, your local community college, secretary at work or fellow business owners.

Movers and Shakers:

These are the king and queens of networking. They seem to know everyone or at least just the right people. They are the people who can save you lots of time and maybe even lots of money by connecting you with the resources that can help you get to the next level in your life, work or business.

The Clean-up Crew:

These are the "finishers" in your life. They are the people who can take your ideas and projects to the next level. They are the people who can help you clean-up your mistakes or help you put it all together. They are your significant other, your business partner, reliable child care providers, virtual assistant, caterers (or your favorite take-out restaurants), office supply stores and copy centers, home supply centers, tax adviser, emergency road service, insurance agents, consumer credit counselor or career counselors.

Taking Action . . .

Today, take a moment to identify your support team. If you find that you are missing critical areas of support start building new relationships today.

- Good Luck!
