Job Loss: Opportunity For Change (Part 2)
When someone becomes unemployed, they will often feel a sense of loss. They experience all sorts of emotions and reactions: disbelief, anger, fear, failure, depression, shame, self-doubt and eventually acceptance.
If you find yourself in this situation...
Acknowledge Your Feelings.
Feel Your Feelings.
Respect Your Feelings.
Ask For Help.
Asking For Help Can Be An Uncomfortable Thing To Do:
Many of us may have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness. So, we have learned to create this image of strength and independence: "I don't need help from nobody", "I'm strong and can do this on my own". But, there are times in our lives when we really do need help. As many successful people in life will tell you, they have been helped by many people along the way. You don't have to struggle in silence. You are not alone. Get connected. Find support.
Join A Job Club/ Attend A Meet-up Group:
Connect with others who are also unemployed, who can give support, feedback and maybe even job leads. Contact your local career center, churches, community centers, online job boards and even your former employer. Or start your own group. Facebook, LinkedIn and local Meetup Groups are great place where you can connect with a support buddy.
Get A Career Counselor or Career Coach:
A career counselor or career coach can help you to fine tune your resume, polish your interviewing skills and offer job referrals. They can help you to re-assess your skills and experience; identify training/educational needs you may have and connect you with community resources. When selecting a career counselor or career coach, look for one who will help you to identify what it is that you really want to do - as oppose to just preparing you to get that next job. You can access free or low cost career counseling at your local career center.
Keep A Journal:
Purchase an inexpensive notebook that you can use as a journal. A journal is a private space where you can express your feelings; and record your thoughts, ideas and goals. This is your creative space. Write, draw or cut out pictures from magazines. Express yourself.
