Change Has its Drawbacks
Before you were born, before your great grandmother's mother was even thought of, life as we knew it was a little different. Women were thought of as inferior people who cooked cleaned and cared for the children. People who were caught committing felonies, whether insignificant, or severe, suffered harsh punishment. Divorce was out of the question and the commandment "Thou shall not commit adultery" was more than just a sin rather it was a law. Now and then, there was always someone who thought they were above everybody and believed that the law didn't apply to them. But that person soon learned that life at that time did not have time for games.
As time moved on, the world suffered through battles of changes. Battles like the Civil Rights, the Feminist Movements, and Civil Unions to name a few. As a country alone, we've come a long way, and those who benefited from our ancestor's struggle show much gratitude by continuing to do what they gave us the right to do. However, to just have a positive outcome to years of fighting would leave life much too easy to live. And to assume that gaining our freedom reaps no consequences is ridiculous. For every positive, there is a negative. For every up there is a down and every change for the good has its drawbacks.
Even though it went unnoticed, women were capable of more than making babies and keeping up the house. Women had the right to be happy and independent. After years of just thinking about it, women decided to take action and today, women are independent, able bodied and becoming more and more successful everyday. But what makes us as a society think that we can commit to such a big change and not have consequences? The government uses everything possible for their personal gain. They don't see women's rights. They see more household income; a justification of the tax increases and inflation. Stop complaining about it. We asked for it.
Now, as successful as women are today, somebody always has to be affected. While the mothers work, who's at home with the children? Both parents are working now and not by choice but out of sheer necessity. Now children are growing up seeing mommy only part time. Hey, the women working at the daycare need to make money. Starting to a pattern?
Did you know that the terms slut, whore, jezebel, and tramp carried a lot more weight then just a mere shrug of the shoulders? And did you know it only took one night of lustful passion to be branded a tramp? Thank God those days are over. To think, women only had a choice of one man. Only one word can grasp that concept: Boring! It wasn't to long ago that people realized that the only person with right over their body was themselves and personally I'm glad to have my body. Now it's complete. Both men and women are free to sleep with whomever they want. But have you notice that the statistics of s*xually transmitted diseases are at an all time high? It's a wonder how people aren't catching on yet. But hey, it's just s*x. Who cares if it burns when you pee? They have pills for that. Sound sick? You may not say it but your actions speak louder. It's what we get for pushing a change to its extreme.
When's the last time you heard about someone being stoned to death for breaking the law? Or why are thieves still walking around with both their arms attached to their body? Here's that answers we hear all the time: they had a bad life. They lacked love and affection. They didn't have opportunity. So what. Very few people have it easy. But it's excuses like that that have gotten killers and rapist pleaded down to a lesser charge or let off completely. Many people have struggled but if this was the reason why felons commit crimes you mine as well imprison the innocent to protect them from the millions of people who had a hard life. The government has slacked off on the criminals and have given themselves the right to pick and choose who goes to jail and how long by the amount of money they have. They can put a price on death and turn robberies and rape into unfortunate technicalities. And as for the death penalty, it has become a complete joke. Now serial killers can go peacefully into the night and be spared the pain of thousand of volts flowing through their veins. Can you imagine how empty the prison would be if the government took better control of these situations? But so what your mother was murdered. The killer had a hard life and lawyers need to make money. Blame society. We put emotions in front of justice and choose politics over precious innocent lives. We go from one extreme to the next. Now we set a precedent we can't erase.
This is always a good topic: divorce. There was a time where divorce wasn't even a word. Of course spouses were miserable knowing what "til death do us part" really meant. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for divorce. Why should anybody be miserable if they don't have to. My parents did, and it was the best decision ever. However, they tried to stick it out as much as they could but in the end, my father remained an ass, so he had to go. I don't blame my mother. She tried but in the end divorce was the only option. For those who have been in a similar situation, it's better to end things as oppose too having your family endure years of misery. But it doesn't justify nearly have of marriages in America resulting in divorce. Marriage is a joke today. Instead of having the mentality that this is forever, we have the mentality that we always get a divorce. How sad. Children today don't have a chance. Daddy's not coming home and mommy has to work late. Here's the basis for your lack of affection excuse.
Personally, I couldn't see myself living in a world where I couldn't make my own choices. To say change should never happen, would be like saying that evolution is unnecessary. Who would prove to their daughters that they are just as good as their sons? Who would work at places like daycare's? ( I know men can do it, but seriously how many do you know?) What if someone was wrongly accused of a felony? Don't they deserve a fair trial? I couldn't imagine growing up with my father around. I might have been a much different person.
I'm proud of what my ancestor's did for us and all the pain and suffering they endure so we can be free even though the outcome brought about many tragedies. There's a balance that we must find. Some of us have already found it. It's the balance that keeps us motivated to become as successful as possible without sacrificing everything else important. The balance that helps us play it safe and smart. It's hard to maintain this balance and even the good ones go astray and as you can see there are still people who believe they're above everyone and the law does not apply to them. When those people begin to outnumber everyone else…well you watch the news.
