Black in the Diaspora means Hispanics,Asians and Jews and ..so forth (155 hits)
Diaspora means "dispersion" as in the spreading of a people.. If your roots are African and you are born/live in China ,you are Black in the Diaspora.
One of the lynchpins of Blacks is our FAITH. WE are Faith based people. Nor should we not be. We are spiritual by nature. Unless one has been "denatured."
Scholarship organizations for young Christian women is an example. The majority of Black functions, awards, Recognitions and Conferences begin with prayer and that is a good thing!! The rest is obvious, regarding those of us in the Diaspora whether we look like Mariah Carey or India.Arie. or Celia Cruz.
I have noticed that there is something that irritates Black American women about those of us in the diaspora. I would love to hear someone say, "you are not Black like us. "Because what I have heard is "you are black just like us" in a very painful tone of voice. Hmmmmmm ..
Well either way is fine with me. Because I have a dual culture to go to,when Idon't feel like being bashed by my "own" sisters who have no pride in themselves. Or who think that having "Black" pride is mutually exclusive from those of us who look black or embrace Black culture by choice.
I will never forget my Ethiopian sister telling some folks one day " in her accent " I have a country " what!! oops...and so do I..and I know who my ancestors are..
I suppose that's why I grew up amongst the "Black Bourgeosie" replete with a Debutante Ball, Jack and Jill membership and all the trappings of the snobbish 800 Registry! My dear Black friends are quite "different." they live in Paris, Greece, own homes in Caribbean..but I always have walked away from all of that pomp and circumstance..but sometimes I wonder...Hmmmm,
I really, really wonder..is there something wrong with being "elitist" Knowledge is Power!!
