School Ambassador Fellowship Program
The U.S. Department of Education (the Department) is excited to announce that it has extended the application period to January 3, 2023, for dynamic educators interested in joining the 2023-2024 cohort of the School Ambassador Fellowship. Launched in 2007, the School Ambassador Fellowship is a professional engagement experience hosted by the Department, that is designed to improve outcomes for students by leveraging the expertise of school-based practitioners in the creation, dissemination, and evaluation of national education policy.
Founded on the principles of partnership, collaboration and cooperation with school-based educators, the Fellowship seeks to:
Establish an active community of teachers, principals, counselors, psychologists, social workers and other school staff members who share expertise and collaborate with Department of Education leaders on national education issues. Engage school-based educators in development of policies that impact learning environments nationwide. Showcase the power of practitioners' voices and expand the critical leadership role of educators at the national, state, and local levels. The School Ambassador Fellowship offers two separate opportunity tracks: full-time and part-time. Full-time Fellows are provided with opportunities to engage with Department officials daily on a range of important matters. Part-time Fellows maintain their regular school responsibilities in their home communities and have scheduled time to collaborate with Department officials on a range of important issues, on a part-time basis. Both positions offer Fellows the flexibility of working remotely while maintaining their current residence.
How does one become eligible for the School Ambassador Fellowship program?
To be eligible to be selected as a School Ambassador Fellow, applicants must:
Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident Currently be a teacher, principal, or other school staff member (and anticipate being employed in this role during the 2023 – 2024 school year) Be employed by a traditional public, charter, private, virtual, military, or tribal school that serves any grade, preschool through twelfth Have at least five years of experience, up to and including the current school year Have daily interaction with students and educators in a school setting in his/her school role Ideal candidates for the School Ambassador Fellowship can demonstrate that they have made significant contributions to student learning and culture throughout their professional careers. They promote excellence in education through their collaboration and leadership, and effectively communicate to a variety of internal and external education stakeholders.
How do local school districts benefit from having a School Ambassador Fellow represented at the Department of Education?
Through their interaction with leaders at the U.S. Department of Education, Fellows provide a direct line of contact and engagement between the Department and their local school districts and are positioned to elevate pressing educational challenges faced by the students they serve.
Fellows build, foster and facilitate relationships between their school districts and the Department’s nationwide network of educational organizations. In collaboration with Department staff and resources, Fellows work on projects intended to solve complex challenges that will directly impact the students, families and educators within their local communities. The BTP Fellowship is an 18-Month experience for Black teacher leaders who have the desire, influence, and capacity to support an effort to forge systems-level change. BTP Fellows will have the opportunity to:
Examine, innovate and imbue new teaching practice models that foster wellness, liberated learning, and increased opportunity for marginalized students.
Engage with a multitude of tangible tools and resources including critical time and space to strategize, peer networking, access to experts, and technical assistance. Build the knowledge, skills, and disposition needed to catalyze and influence the emergence of transformative practices that create opportunities to support Black teachers’ thriving.
Receive thought partnership from coaches to strategize how best to address equity challenges and/or reach their instructional and leadership aspirations. Earn a chance to assert themselves as experts in the field through possibilities for shared publication and peer-to-peer learning.
Receive a stipend of $1000 per semester, and resources to efficiently implement future initiatives so that they might scale their efforts moving forward.
Engage with and build a supportive community of restoration and renewal through critical friendship, action learning, and shared experience. Intended audience
