HOMETOWN MEMPHIS HAD A SPECIAL STORY OF A FALLEN OFFICER
On the same day that The Greatest Muhammad Ali was being laid to rest was also one of Memphis's Finest Police Officer Verdell Smith. Officer Smith was taken away by a chaotic incident that occurred in the Memphis Downtown district on Saturday Night, June 04, 2016 when a driver on a rampage hit and killed him with a vehicle after a shooting spree. Three people were wounded by gunshots, and the suspect ran over Officer Smith who was conducting traffic and people on the busy night's affairs. Officer's Smith funeral was on June 10, 2016 with thousands of Memphians and also fellow police officers spoke of his prestigious record as a community leader and role model. Hundreds of supporters also attended the celebration of his life with cards, letters, and flowers. A sea of blue also surrounded in a convoy of police cars on Thursday night June 09, 2016.
