Alabama State University Hosts a Variety of Summer Camps All Open to the Public (14752 hits)


Parents in search of activities featuring both fun & enrichment for their kids will find a host of options at ASU. From academics, sports, fitness & self-enrichment, ASU’s summer camps offers something for everyone.

All the kids and young adults in the River Region will have plenty to do this summer at ASU with its myriad summer camps, which offer many fun and special interest treats for the child or young adult who demands more than just a cookie-cutter camp.

Below is a synopsis of each camp.

SUMMER CAMPS WITH SOMETHING EXTRA

SKYCAP - Summer Kids/Youth College Adventure Program – June 6-24 (1st Session) and July 11-29 (2nd Session)

A variety of academic and self-enrichment programs are offered at various locations, times and costs. Designed for 1st- through 12th-graders, courses are offered in reading/phonics, writing, English, social studies, mathematics, sciences, study skills, algebra, geometry, computers, swimming and more. Cost -- Full Day: $425 per child, per session, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; Half Day: $300 per child, per session, 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Summer Band Camp – June 13-19

Designed for 8th- through 12th-grade students, the camp provides clinics and exciting activities for bands, flag corps, twirlers, drum majors, majorettes and directors. The cost is $325 for the week. Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 334-229-4289.

ASPIRE Head-Start Camp – June 27-July 28

This camp focuses on study skills, organization skills and social skills for students in grades 9 through 12. The camp aims to help students get a head start for the 2016-2017 school year. THEATRE CAMPS
All payments for each theatre camp listed below must be made by money orders only. No cash or checks. Each camp will take place at the Leila Barlow Theatre, located at the corner of North University Drive and South Jackson Street. T.A.P.S. (Theatre Artist Performance School) – May 31 - June 11

This camp is designed for children ages six to 12. It scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost, $310 per child, will include lunch, snacks and a T-shirt. Participants also will receive a DVD of the camp’s final production, which is held on the last day, Saturday, June 11 at 1 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

TTI (Technical Theatre Initiative) – June 6-11 and 19-25

The camp is designed to give participants ages 15 to 18 firsthand experience with the basics of costumes, lights, set design, entertainment law, sound videography, photography, editing, stage management and life skills, to include dressing for success, speech and diction, as well as interview, ethics and interpersonal communication. The camp is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost is $200.

Camp 3T (Teaching Through Theatre) – June 19-25

The residential camp, created for teenagers 13-18, offers classes in acting, singing, dancing and oral interpretation. The cost for the camp is $360 per child, which will cover room and board in an ASU dormitory, a snack, three meals, a t-shirt and a DVD of the camp’s final performance, which is held on the last day.

ARPAC (Adult Repertory Performing Arts Camp) – July 8-10

This is a three-day residential workshop that includes training in television, film and stage for ages 19 and up. The cost is $310 per participant, which includes room and board in an ASU dormitory, a headshot, resume, t-shirt and DVD of the final production, which takes place on the last day.

SPORTS CAMPS
Youth Cheer Clinic (ages four to 18) – May 31 - June 3
The Youth Cheer Clinic will be held May 31 - June 3 at Lockhart Gymnasium, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event will provide instructional cheer and dance to the youth, ages 4 to 18. In addition to meeting and interacting with the ASU cheerleaders during the clinic, the participants will learn cheers and dance in groups based on their age. The clinic culminates with a showcase on the final day for family and friends. The cost of the event is $50 per person, which includes the clinic, T-shirt and snacks. Summer Cheer Camp (junior high and high school squads) - June 4 - 5
The ASU Summer Cheer Camp will be held June 4-5 at Lockhart Gymnasium, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This camp will provide instructional cheer to junior high and high school squads only. In addition to meeting and interacting with the ASU cheerleaders during the camp, the participants will learn technique, cheers, stunts, and dance. The clinic will culminate with a showcase for family and friends. The cost of camp is $50 per participant, which includes the camp, T-shirt and snacks. The Lewis Jackson Basketball Camp – June 6 - 9
Cost is $110, including a $25 nonrefundable application fee. Boys ages eight to those entering 12th grade are eligible to attend. Campers receive instruction in fundamental skills, team concepts and principles of sportsmanship. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, skill evaluation and a certificate. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more information, call the basketball office at 334-229-4509.

Brian Jenkins Sr. Football Camp (Montgomery) – June 10
Cost is $30 per person. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 12, at Hornet Stadium. The camp is designed to help campers maximize their potential and performance in skill-specific positions. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.

7-on-7 Passing Tournament Camp – June 11

This camp will be administered by the ASU football coaching staff. The cost is $30 per player, $250 per team of 14 players and 2nd team $200. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 11 at Hornet Stadium. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.

Freda Freeman-Jackson Division I Basketball Camp – June 13-16

Cost is $110, including a $25 non-refundable application fee. Girls ages eight to 18 are eligible to attend. Campers receive instruction in fundamental skills, team concepts and principles of sportsmanship. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, skill evaluation and a certificate. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more information, contact the basketball office at 334-229-4515 or 334-229-4516.

Football Camp/Clinic, Dothan, Ala. – June 14

Cost is $30 per person. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 14 at Rip Hewes Stadium and is designed to help campers maximize their potential and performance in skill-specific positions. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.


Football Camp/Clinic, Mobile, Ala. - June 15

Cost is $30 per person. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the City Stadium in Prichard and is designed to help campers maximize their potential and performance in skill-specific positions. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.

Football Camp/Clinic, Birmingham, Ala. – June 17

Cost is $40 per person. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 17 at Parker High School and is designed to help campers maximize their potential and performance in skill-specific positions. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.


Football Camp/Clinic, Phenix City, Ala. – June 18

Cost is $30 per person. The camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 17 at Garrett Stadium and is designed to help campers maximize their potential and performance in skill-specific positions. For more information, call the football office at 334-229-4444.
