A 7.8 EARTHQUAKE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2016
Caused the country's worst disaster in its history of recording. Buildings totally fell to the ground leaving thousands covered in rubble, and some 570 dead. Total injuries topped with at least 7,015 and 25,000 living in shelters. As of this latest report, some 155 people have been officially missing. In an effort to help with funding the earthquake's financial strain President Rafael Correa announced measures to increase taxes for at least one year. The towns of Manta, Portoviejo and Pedernales were the hardest hit and suffered major catastrophic damages of buildings, homes. Efforts are continuing with rescue teams digging to save lives or recover anyone dead or alive. World and international help are assisting to the country's troubled recovery.
