Losing a child is a horrific situation for any parent — but hearing you lost a baby at birth must be an agonizing heartbreak beyond comprehension.
A woman from Missouri recently met her daughter for the first time.
Zella Price gave birth to her daughter 50 years ago at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis and she was told that her daughter died just one hour after birth. In reality, Melanie Diane Gilmore was very much alive and had been given away to an adopted family.
A local news story doesn’t shed much more light on why Melanie was taken away from her mother and placed for adoption, but once she knew her mother was looking for her, she went out of her way to make that meeting happen. As the news report indicates, Zella’s joy at meeting her long lost daughter made her speechless.
Together, they are beginning an investigation to find out more about what happened that fateful day at the hospital.
“There’s nothing greater. There’s nothing greater than this. Nothing,” Price told KTVI.
Zella Price said she is hurt by the years of separation but is thankful for this second chance.
“(God) has given me everything the devil has taken from me,” Price said. “I’m getting it back. I’m getting my baby back.”
Gilmore lost her hearing at the age of three because of a childhood illness. This reunion is something she has wanted for a long time.
“I am just so happy…very excited,” Gilmore said.
