Actor and musician Harry Belafonte was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Govenor's Awards in Los Angeles on November 09, 2014. The 87 year old Belafonte was chosen for his work and activism in the support of civil rights movement, and his fight against segregation. In addition, he was highlighted with his work with HIV in Africa and many charities for diseases. Belafonte was among a host of stars such as actress Maureen O'Hara, Japanese screen director Hayao Miyazki and French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere. In Belafonte's acceptance speech was quoted as saying: "Artis are the radical voice of civilization." Many popular stars attended the award ceremony of the Govenor's event including Sidney Poitier, Ron Howard, Warren Betty and Reese Witherspoon.
