NEW YORK DAILY NEWS August 10, 2014- A top World Health Organization official said Sunday the number of Ebola cases in Africa has topped 1,800 — but the virus can still be stopped.
Dr. Keiji Fukuda, assistant director general for health security at the WHO, said on “Face the Nation” that there have been 1,825 cases and more than 900 deaths in four African nations, numbers that are expected to continue to grow.
But Fukuda said the disease can still be contained if international authorities can “scale up” their response to the outbreak, blaming its spread on weak health facilities in the underdeveloped nations.
Players hold a sign reading 'Kick Ebola out of Africa' before a youth football tournament Sunday in the Ivory Coast as West Africa fights the deadly epidemic.
