So many of us were affected by Robin Williams sudden death. He was so ingrained in our psyches from the body of work, that his death brings up our own losses.
He bought back memories to us when our adopted son was young, and suffering from emotional issues from his abuse in foster care. He too was suicidal when he was placed briefly in a special needs school.
Needless to say, this time was scary for Walt and myself as his parents. We were thankful that the staff could put him under 24-hour surveillance, which we could not do for him at home.
Fortunately , we were able to get him help, and today he is a happy, well adjusted, self-sufficient young man. We're so thankful he made it through that difficult childhood, and now is on a mission to help other young foster kids.
One thing we learned, is that when someone close to you is suffering with emotional and or mental illness, you suffer too unless you can deal with your feelings.
