Summer is (almost) here and that means that it’s time to break out our favorite summer style staple, the maxi dress. Maxi dresses are one of the most comfortable, flattering, and forgiving items of clothing to wear, but they’re also surprisingly versatile too. These flowing, floor length dresses can work for every woman’s wardrobe. Check out these tips to rocking a maxi without it looking like a nightgown.

1. Start with a solid foundation: No matter how cute the dress, if you have all kinds of jiggly bits and odds and ends floppin’ around in there, it’s not a good look. A strapless or convertible bra will keep the girls under control without the risk of the oh so tacky visible bra straps. On the bottom, try boy-shorts style underwear to give you coverage without the VPL. Depending on how form fitting your dress is, you might also want to consider body shapers like spanx.

2. Keep the shoes simple: Maxi dresses lend themselves to a naturally relaxed look…think vacation chic. Opt for cute flats or wedges if you need a little height.

3. Dress it up: One of the best things about maxidresses is that they look great under layers. Throw on a tailored blazer to make it work appropriate or a chambray shirt or denim jacket and cool accessories for cool summer nights.

4. If you’re a curvy diva: Opt for wider straps of capped sleeved versions to hide bra straps and compliment your upper body. Avoid the tent look by choosing a body skimming (not tight) fit.

5. Define your waist: Play up or fake some curves with a belt. Make sure the belt is cinched at your natural waist. Don’t know what that is? Stand up straight and bend to either side. The point at which your torso bends is your natural waist.

BMWK – What say you? How do you rock your maxi dresses?
