The mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin sits down with S2S Publisher Jamie Foster Brown to talk about her son’s younger days, his last days and what she’s doing to keep his memory alive. Get an excerpt of the Q&A below and get more from Sybrina in the February 2014 issue. *** Jamie: When [George] Zimmerman was at the trial and they found him not guilty, what went through you? Did you feel that that would happen? Sybrina: A part of me believed that America had come that far in order to convict someone, in order to hold someone accountable for what they’ve done. So a part of me felt like, “Yes, he’s going to be convicted,” because of the facts that came out. Because Trayvon was a minor. Because Trayvon wasn’t breaking into any houses. He wasn’t doing any of those things. He was on his cell phone on a conversation with a young lady and he had no weapon. So, we thought surely they would see those things. Then another part of me says, “We came so far and we still have so far to go.” So I really had mixed feelings, but I think for the most part, I thought that he would go to jail and he would be held accountable. And when it did not happen, of course it was devastating. We just absolutely could not believe it.
