Republican in Nevada Says He Would Bring Back Slavery if Constituents Wanted It (1036 hits)

It’s gotten to a point with many Republicans where much of the time, I simply don’t know what to say anymore. It seems the moment I think they can’t get any worse—they get much worse.
A prime example of this comes in the way of comments made by Nevada Republican assemblyman Jim Wheeler, who said at a Republican gathering that if his constituents wanted him to vote to allow slavery, he would.
Wheeler said, “If that’s what they wanted, I’d have to hold my nose —they’d probably have to hold a gun to my head, but yeah,” in reference to the possibility of him voting to allow slavery if the people in his district supported it.
To his “credit” (if you want to call it that) he at least said he would do so reluctantly, but that still doesn’t excuse remarks which are nothing short of reprehensible.
Mr. Wheeler has since claimed his comments were taken out of context and he was simply displaying his willingness to represent the people in his district.
But you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand the difference between representing the people in your district, (because that is your job) and saying you would support bringing back slavery. So, even if he didn’t mean exactly what he said (and his comments were taken out of context), at best this man should be described as ridiculously incompetent and lacking any common sense.
Now, of course, Republicans in Nevada have been quick to distance themselves from Mr. Wheeler’s comments. United States Republican Senator Dean Heller called them “insensitive and wrong.”
I just find it interesting that Republicans often defend themselves against the claim by many that their party is littered with racism, yet there seems to be no shortage of examples showcasing the racism that flows through the GOP.
Living in Texas I see examples of blatant racism by Republicans nearly every day. As I’ve said it plenty of times, I hear President Obama referred to by some derogatory label for African Americans far more often than I do his actual name.
Now, while Mr. Wheeler’s comments might be slightly taken out of context as it relates to any kind of proof that he’s a racist, they do showcase his absolute ignorance as it relates to the subject of racism and slavery. For anyone to honestly believe that their constituents supporting slavery is an excuse to vote in favor of allowing slavery is, quite honestly, one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.
