Teens With Down Syndrome Named Homecoming King and Queen at Florida High School (621 hits)
Semone Adkins and Travjuan "Bubba" Hunter, two teens at West Orange High School in Orlando, Florida, made history last weekend as the first ever homecoming king and queen with Down syndrome. It was the first time that teens with Down syndrome received such an honor in Central Florida, according to a local association.
One student commented, "We are not doing this because we feel bad for them or anything like that. We are doing this because we genuinely like Bubba and Semone. They [are] high spirited and are nice people."
Part of what helped students get to know the pair was the school's Best Buddies Club, a student organization that encourages friendships between mainstream students and those with special needs.
Local sponsors jumped in too! Men's Wearhouse donated Hunter’s tuxedo, and Dillard's donated a beautiful bright orange dress for Adkins. Ulta donated her makeup, and a couple of teachers pitched in to help them get snazzy shoes and accessories.
On the homecoming day, both arrived in real style - Adkins pulled up in a red Ferrari, and Hunter in a black Maserati.
