Senators approve $251 million for advancing nursing programs for 2014 (597 hits)

Senators approve millions for nursing programs A Senate committee recently earmarked $251 million for advancing nursing initiatives. »
The fiscal year (FY) 2014 bill provides the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs $251 million, which is consistent with the President Obama's fiscal budget recommendation and the request made by the nursing industry. The increase to the Title VIII programs is 15 percent over the FY 2013 post sequestration levels. Additionally, the National Institute of Nursing Research received $145.2 million.
The increased funding was provided to the Advanced Nursing Education program bringing the total to $83.5 million.

The remaining Title VIII programs included: $83.1 million for the national Nurse CORPS Loan Repayment and Scholarship Programs; $39.6 million for nurse education, practice, quality, and retention; $24.6 million for nurse faculty loan programs; $15.8 million for nursing workforce diversity; and $4.5 million for comprehensive geriatric education.
Additionally, $5 million was set aside for nurse-managed health clinics.

The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies recently approved a fiscal year (FY) 2014 bill that provides $165.6 billion in discretionary budget authority to make important investments to reduce healthcare costs, bolster medical research, and improve early childhood care and education.
