Research News: New Study Suggests that Weight Training has Numerous Health Benefits in Obese Women
Cardiovascular disease is the third leading cause of preventable death among women between the ages of 25 and 44 years and obesity can dramatically increase the risk of death in this population. My new research presented at The Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting held in Westminster, Colorado suggests that a twice-weekly weight training regimen greatly enhances blood flow in previously inactive and obese young women. This enhanced blood flow is indicative of improved cardiovascular health.
I along with colleagues from the University of Illinois at Chicago investigated the effects of 8 weeks of weight training on blood flow as measured in a major artery in the arm. We found that weight training not only enhanced blood flow but also resulted in a lower waist circumference, more lean body mass, and greater muscular strength—all in the absence of cardio exercise, dieting, and weight loss.
Taken together, our results suggest that weight training has numerous health benefits in obese women, especially those that affect the heart. These findings show that weight training may help in the prevention of heart attacks and strokes.
