What kind of impact does a father have on his older children? Today on Home School Heartbeat, with host Mike Farris, a father of six answers that question.
Mike Farris: This week my guest is Scott Somerville, who was one of our co-laborers, one of the attorneys here at HSLDA for many years before he moved off to serve homeschool families through the well-known curriculum resources called Tapestry of Grace. Welcome to the program, Scott.
Scott Somerville: Mike, it’s great to be on the show.
Mike: Scott, you have six children, and I can personally attest to the fact that they’ve made it through the teen years and into adulthood with fine style. Why is a father’s involvement in his teens’ lives so crucial?
Scott: Mike, biblically, a father really matters to the family. You can’t have a strong family with a dad who’s abdicated that role. Secondly, a father’s involvement is so critical because of human nature. I mean, no matter what our gender-neutral society may say, men and women really are different. Moms and dads really are different. I’m a firm believer that God created men and women equal in dignity but different in role. Men reflect God’s strength and His justice in special ways. Women so beautifully reflect God’s beauty and His care. But a dad has to bring what God has revealed through dads to the family. Kids need the discipline, they need the strength, they need the dad’s high standards. And finally, I think it’s just plain effective. A dad can have a huge impact on a teen just by getting involved, staying connected. I hope we can talk about that all week.
