New York Governor Signs Bear Protection Legislation Into Law The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and Care2 teamed up to get more than 14,000 people to sign a petition that would protect New York's 7,000 wild black bears from being poached for the bear parts trade. No Seaport in the Cayman Islands’ Half Moon Bay The sheltered waters of the Cayman Islands’ Half Moon Bay are home to a kaleidoscopic array of rare marine life, but private developers threatened to destroy this breathtaking ecosystem by building an ecologically irresponsible and economically unnecessary seaport at the site. Thanks to advocates, including 63,000 Care2 members, that seaport won’t be damaging Half Moon Bay’s East End environment. Read more.
Caribbean Airlines Stops Shipping Primates for Research Caribbean Airlines has just been added to the growing list of airlines who refuse to ship primates for research and has updated it’s policy stating on its website, in bold, that “Caribbean Airlines will not accept primates used for laboratory research experimentation and exploitation purposes.” Want to get all airlines to stop shipping primates for research? Detroit Automakers Accept Obama’s 54.4 MPG Efficiency Standard Care2 and Pew Environment Group would like to thank more than 27,000 of you who signed a petition to tell President Obama to adopt strong fuel efficiency standards. 3 major automakers agreed to participate in the next phase of the Obama Administration’s national vehicle program, which sets a goal of increasing fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon for cars and light-duty trucks by model year 2025. 'West Memphis Three' Freed After 18 Years in Prison Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., the ‘West Memphis Three’ were freed Friday after having spent 18 years in jail. Six thousand members signed an activist petition demanding the three receive a fair trial, and thanks to efforts from you and people around the world, the “West Memphis Three” trial continued until freedom was found. EPA Stops The Sale Of DuPont’s Tree-Killing Herbicide Last month, Care2 blogger Miranda Perry reported on an herbicide that was thought to be responsible for thousands of dead and dying trees across the United States. More than 700 Care2 members signed a petition asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revoke its approval until the toxic chemical can undergo additional safety testing. Just a few weeks later, the EPA ordered the DuPont chemical company to immediately halt the sale, use and distribution of the herbicide Imprelis, citing possible violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
