(Petition) Ask McGehee High School Officials (To Right A Wrong) Declare Kymberly Wimberly Sole Valedictorian (1242 hits)

Arkansas High School Won’t Let African-American Student Be Valedictorian
When Kymberly Wimberly was poised to be valedictorian of her class, the school principal decided it would be a "big mess" and made a White student with a lower GPA co-valedictorian. It's not only an injustice to Kymberly but sends a troubling message to all students. Join us in demanding Kymberly's principal and the McGehee school district apologize, acknowledge Kymberly as sole valedictorian, and take clear steps to ensure all students have equal opportunities in the district regardless of their ethnic background.

An Arkansas high school would not let an African American student become valedictorian of her class even though she had the highest grade-point average because school administrators were concerned a black valedictorian would create a “big mess” at the predominately white school. According to a complaint filed in federal court, Kymberly Wimberly got only a single B in her four years at McGehee Secondary School, a high school southeast of Little Rock. She took as many Honors and Advanced Placement courses as was allowed and earned the highest G.P.A. in her class. But despite these accomplishments, school administrators and personnel treated two other white students as “heirs apparent” to the valedictorian spots. McGhee Principal Darrel Thompson confirmed the differential treatment when he told Wimberly that he had decided to name a white student as co-valedictorian, despite the fact that the white student had a lower G.P.A. >>> www.care2.com/causes/arkansas-high-school-wont-let-african-american-student-be-valedictorian.html#ixzz1UAVpbBUr

From Head On with Bob Kincaid, Wednesday July 27 2011. Kimberly Wimberly, a black student at McGehee Secondary School near Little Rock, Arkansas, has been forced to share Valedictorian status with a white student with a lower GPA due to school administrators' concerns that allowing her sole Valedictorian status would lead to "a big mess." This clip presents some of the main points of the story. Head On with Bob Kincaid is 3 hours of cussin' and dis-cussin' with America's only born and bred Southern liberal talk host. >>>> http://youtu.be/xysr1RemI0Y
