James 5:16 AMP: The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].
U.S. General George Patton was quoted as saying, "We have to pray for ourselves." It was December 1944 when the German Sixth Panzer Army was making a desperate attempt to regain lost territory in France. Heavy rains, thick fogs, and swirling ground mists kept Allied planes grounded and land forces isolated. Patton knew that if the German troops were to be turned back the skies would have to clear.
"I am a strong believer in prayer," Patton told Army Chaplain, James O'Neill. "There are three ways that men get what they want: by planning, by working, and by praying," he said. "Great living is not all output of thought and work. A man has to have intake as well. I don't know what you call it, but I call it ... prayer."
General Patton quoted Dr. Alexis Carrel, who a few days earlier described prayer "as one of the most powerful forms of energy man can generate." Patton added that he believed "it is like plugging in on a current whose source is in heaven. I believe that prayer completes that circuit. It is power." By mid-December, 250,000 prayer cards had been distributed to Patton's Third Army, and although continued rain had been forecasted, by December 20th skies cleared and Allied Forces were turning back the Nazi advance (The Art of War, p. 19-24).
