Homeschooling on a Shoestring (943 hits)

Homeschooling on a Shoestring Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on May 3, 2007.
Can you afford to homeschool? The answer is yes—if you’re willing to supplement your tight finances with a different commodity: creativity. Tune in as Home School Heartbeat host Mike Smith and his guest Liz Curry address this topic.

Mike Smith:
Liz, not every homeschooling family has the luxury of extra cash. Do you have any suggestions for homeschooling on a very limited income?

Liz Curry:
Well, what I’ve seen a lot of moms do is use the library. Other moms have gotten books—maybe an encyclopedia, that sort of thing—and they’ve developed a curriculum out of that. Other moms I’ve talked to have used the newspaper and developed a curriculum out of that. There are all sorts of programs out there that people will assist you with. And you can find this a lot of times when you go to the conferences.

Mike:
Well, Liz, you talked about your relatives and others helping. What kind of help did they provide for you?

Liz:
Well, my homeschool, when I first started as a single parent, had to start at 4:00 in the morning. And at 8:00 I had to finish and then go on to work. And so I had my dad, who owned a store, to do a life skills program for my children, so they worked at the store. And they got to work on some of their math skills and their people skills and that sort of thing. And then when I had come home, then we’d continue with our classwork.

Mike:
Liz, thanks so much for sharing.

And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
