Spike, Tonya Lewis Lee Pen Third Children’s Book (459 hits)

Wednesday, February 09, 2011 By: Tonya Pendleton, BlackAmericaWeb.com
Film director Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, are both accomplished people. Lee, is an acclaimed director whose films “Malcolm X,” “Get on The Bus,” “School Daze,” “Clockers” and so many others are part of the most prolific body of work for a modern black filmmaker in this century. Lewis Lee received her law degree from the University of Virginia and is now running her own business, Madstone Company, Inc.

The parents of two young children, the Lees are co-authors of “Please, Baby, Please” and “Please, Puppy, Please.”

Their latest book hopes to encourage young people to prize accomplishment as well.

Entitled “Giant Steps To Change the World,” it's about people who have done just that. From Barack Obama to Muhammad Ali, it gives young readers insight into the strides those leaders had to take in order to make history.

“Giant Steps to Change the World” is unique in one aspect – the profiles of each individual only identify them by what they’ve done, so that you must figure out by the description who they are. The key is the quotes inside the front and back covers that are from each of the people referenced in the book. So, if you’re reading to a child, you may have to brush up on your own history in order to share the correct person with them.

Illustrated by Sean Qualls, the book has lively pictures featuring an African-American child climbing steps throughout. Qualls has also illustrated the children’s book, “Little Cloud and Lady Wind,” by Pulitzer Prize Winner Toni Morrison and Slade Morrison, among others.

I didn't realize there were two more books written after 'Please Baby Please'. My son and I love their first book and hopefully his kindergarten teacher will let him share it with the class for Black History Month.
