An HBCU Call To Arms: Let's Be The Change We Want to See (1034 hits)
Our annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King is now a memory. Many of us attended various celebrations where we got to remember, recount and rejoice in the legacy of this great role model and contributor to the world. But now what? Do we simply put our memories back in the box and wait for next year's celebration, or do we build on the momentum that has been generated and work to make the dream a reality?
Sometimes, I like to think of myself as a social scientist who likes to push the boundaries of conventional wisdom and practice. As a consequence, I would like to propose, that we, the people on whose behalf Dr. King worked so diligently and gave his life to serve, pick up the banner of economic justice and true equality and carry forth the struggle.
By we, I mean the members on this site (HBCU Connect) and all others who would like to engage in this noble and worthwhile struggle.
During my time on the site, I have been associated with a vast array of intelligent, energetic, dedicated and like-minded brothers and sisters whom I believe are uniquely positioned to make a monumental difference in the world which surrounds us.
If President Barack Obama can harness the power of technology to win a presidency, shouldn't we be able to use it to address the issues which affect us as a people and nation?
Yes, erecting such a movement will be fraught with challenges, fits and starts and occasional setbacks. But name a progressive movement that has not had to address and overcome the very same challenges.
I believe to my core, that we can and should do this.
I believe we have the means to do this. The question is, do we have the will, the faith, the work ethic that is required to do what we all know needs to be done?
I will leave that question for you to answer.
I believe in us and our abilities to complete the work Dr. King started. We are the beneficiaries of his dreams. Let's now carry forth the legacy so our children and later generations will have our dreams and work on which to build.
Let's demonstrate our appreciation to Dr. King by showing in a very concrete way that we, too, will sacrifice to make America the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
