Black Women's Health, Wealth Get Five-Day Focus (606 hits)
Stephanie Jordan, a jazz singer and exercise expert, returned to New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and crucial services were missing in the community, and some problems still were prevalent – especially among black women Jordan told BlackAmericaWeb.com .
Organizers of the New Orleans debut of the 2010 Healthy Wealthy Wise BWR National Empowerment Tour want to get the attention of black women and equip them with tools to enhance their health and wealth. The five days of roundtable events will include everything from exercise, a health fair, several panel discussions and even a Congressional political forum.
The event, set for Friday, Oct. 8 through Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Dillard University, is hosted by the Black Women’s Roundtable, an initiative of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation. Over the next seven months, similar events will be held in six other states and the District of Columbia, said Melanie Campbell, president and chief executive officer of NCBCP.
“The National Coalition has a long history in the Gulf Coast Region and has been working to support our affiliates in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi impacted by Katrina-Rita with recovery and rebuilding over the past five years,” Campbell said. “Now, these same communities are in crisis again due to the recent oil spill. To assist communities impacted, it was imperative that we launch our initiative in the Gulf Coast cities of New Orleans, Mobile, Alabama and Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi.”
The empowerment tour will provide black and underserved women and girls with tools to help them live healthier, achieve economic security and sustainability, be empowered through educational and training opportunities and access affordable technology to compete. Jordan says this is an opportunity for women to take a self assessment and say, “what can I do to change?”
