"Whoopi Goldberg grew up in a housing project, acting in children's theater, but later dropping out of high school. In 1974 she moved to California, where she performed in repertory theater, supporting herself and a young daughter by bricklaying, work at a funeral home, and as a beautician.
She created the one-woman Spook Show, which won her a stint on Broadway, and went on to star in The Color Purple(1985), a film performance that earned her an Oscar nomination as well as Golden Globe and NAACP Image Awards.
In 1990 she won the Oscar for her role in Ghost, only the second African American woman to achieve that honor (Hattie McDaniel won in 1939 for Gone With the Wind).
Renowned for the intelligence, social insight, and humanity of her comedic voice, Goldberg is also known for giving back to the community, as a founding member of HBO's "Comic Relief" benefit shows for the homeless, and in efforts to fight substance abuse and AIDS and to support human rights worldwide."
