What Are You Doing To Empower Our Community? (933 hits)
A trillion dollars!!! How many of you have seen a trillion dollars in cold hard cash? I haven't. But that's how much buying power black people have. Wait a minute! If we have that much buying power, why are we still poor? Why does our inner city languish in poverty?
Let's follow the black dollar on an imaginary shopping trip. We spend our first few dollars in the morning on our way to work at Mickey D's on a sausage mcmuffin combo meal. Hmm, was that a black-owned restaurant? Who cares! I'm late for work. I don't have time to do a background check! After fighting traffic for 30 minutes, we finally arrive at our job and head to our cubicle. Time flies and before we know it, it's time to eat again.
Let's see, we had McDonald's for breakfast so let's grab a sandwich from the new deli across the street. Umm, that grilled chicken sub looks delicious. Seven dollars spent already and not one went back into our community but the day is young yet. We head back to work after a 30 minute break. Fast forward to quitting time at five. On the way to pick up the kids from daycare, we stop for groceries. Bam, one hundred fifty dollars gone just like that on food. Wouldn't it have been nice if that had found its way back into the hood?
When you think about it, we don't really have to change much. Continue doing what we normally do, just look for black business owners to spend it on this time. Is it the white man's fault that our neighborhoods are in despair? Ask yourself, how much of that trillion dollars can I give back to my community?
I support my black community by shopping at black-owned beauty supply stores. I know for many of us, this is hard to do and I understand. I was there once. But watching videos like The Empowerment Project and associating with like-minded individuals in the Black Business Builders Club opened my eyes. Black people can work well together. We prove it everyday.
