President Obama Establishes A White House Council on Women and Girls (152 hits)

On Wed. March 12th 2009, President Barack Obama announced the establishment of a White House Council on Women and Girls naming his Senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett, as the Council's Chair and Tina Tchen, Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, as its Executive Director.

The White House Council on Women and Girls is charged with providing a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronting women and girls. It will also ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families. Black Career Women, (BCW) a national, non-profit organization, has been diligently and forthrightly addressing the career concerns of black women across this country for over 30 years. Our career development programs have positively impacted the lives of thousands of women and their families. We applaud President Obama's vision and determination to advocate change that we CAN believe in, by creating the White House Council on Women and Girls.

We hope this council will bring public attention and meaningful solutions to women's issues long ignored, that limit access and advancement, preventing many of us from truly living the American Dream. In these extremely difficult economic times, women, especially black and Latino women and their families are losing their jobs, their homes and their retirements in devastating numbers. Clearly, this Council is desperately needed to make sustainable public policies that will eradicate lingering vestiges of racism and discrimination and that will also accelerate efforts to finally annihilate glass and concrete ceilings in the workplace. Black Career Women urges our women across the country to be vigilant in giving the work of this council our attention, our feedback and our support.

President Obama has blazed a notable trail on behalf of women in his first 50 days -- signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and now by establishing a White House Council on Women and Girls.

BCW encourages its members, friends and associates to contact Tina Tchen, Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, who will serve as Executive Director of the White House Council on Women and Girls to offer your insights, encouragement and support!
