ECOMONY IS DOWN, BUT c*ndom SALES ARE UP?! (1018 hits)
ALL I CAN SAY UPON READING THIS ARTICLE IS, "HOW RETARDED CAN THIS COUNTRY GET???"
The economy may be limp, but c*ndom sales are not.
Sales of the contraceptive device have risen five percent this year, according to a report by the Nielsen Company, and manufacturers are expecting 2009 to be even better.
Jennifer Grizzle, a representative from Durex c*ndoms, said the increase in sales could be attributed to the fact that c*ndoms are cheap, the weather is cold and economy is, well... flimsy.
"People want to stay in and not go out so much," Grizzle said. "In a down economy, many postpone a planned pregnancy."
Grizzle said sales in the last three years have spiked at the beginning of the year and during the summer months.
"All the high schools and colleges are off, as well as people seem to have more time," she said. "In August, colleges go back to school and we see a spike then as well."
Montgomery senior Linsey Grove, Safer s*x Patrol coordinator, said the rise in sales can also be attributed to education programs about safe s*x.
Grove has noticed many Registered Student Organizations are helping by giving out free c*ndoms on-campus at such events like tailgating.
"A lot more people want to volunteer," Grove said. "Also, more residence halls are collaborating for c*ndoms, so there is more of a demand."
The Safer s*x Patrol gets their c*ndoms through a company called the Total Access Group. The group is used by many colleges and high schools, but also by some government agencies to encourage protection.
"We are more of a non-profit, almost, if retail sales go up, we don't see it," said David Franco, Michigan account manager for the group.
Franco said c*ndom sales going up could be because of more focus on safer s*x rather than abstinence programs.
"Around seven years ago there was a drop-off in c*ndom sales because of abstinence programs," Franco said. "Now, it's sort of leveled off."
Many of the reasons for the increase point to the economic strife that many people are dealing with, Grove said.
"In an economic crisis, stress is going up," Grove said. "s*x is a stress reliever, so people will have it. It's universal. It's great that people are using safety."
