Do you think Etta James has a reason to object to Beyonce singing her song,At Last? (5360 hits)
Firstly, it's her only hit --her signature song. The problem is that now it's licensed to Beyonce to sing. However Beyonce is a vain-glorious perfomer who cannot seem to get enough acccolades. Showing an insatiable need to outdo everyone. This last coup netted her world wide exposure to those that never have heard of her, yes there are people who haven't-granted it may be an older population. Etta has had a rough life-what are you thoughts?
I totally agree with Marta. Beyonce' is insatiable when it comes to wanting to outdo others, which sometimes makes others dislike her. I think she's gorgeous, but so does she, thus part of her problem. I think Ms. James is tired of her like everyone else. Beyonce' needs to humble down some.

She is quite transparent--how will it all end for her? I instinctively responded to the news that Beyonce would sing her song by feeling a little sad for Etta.

I can understand some of Etta's anger, but then again not really... Maybe she would have preferred to sing her own song, and have Beyonce lip sing it for her movie, and actually perform on Obama's big day, that's understandable. No one can out do an original artist. Personally, I'd be flattered if someone took interest in my work and wanted to emulate me. Beyonce is a Virgo, and despite what some may perceive of her, she has a humble nature, and I believe that's why she's accomplished as much success as she has, and will continue to do so, as a humble spirit means a level head. I'm not a fan of either, but I give them much respect, and hope they can reconcile their differences, but on Etta's part, I'd call it envy or even jealousy...

Interesting take on us Virgo's--ponder this--Sophia Loren,Raquel Welch, Lola Falana, and other beauties never , ever talked about their voluptous curves, or their "beauty" maybe it's a Black American thing--as we have no doubt witnessed Black American women patting themselves on the back --interesting- Beyonce's success can be measured by three outstanding confluences 1. it was her time. 2. she has a tremendous work ethic 3. she has two parents who in making her a star served themselves. Without her family's involvement she would never had made it--look at all the entertainers that have without all of that mollycoddling! I thought about the response of "jealousy" but frankly Etta is too old to worry about competing with a younger woman.. and every career move made by the Knowles team is cold and calculating..hmm Virgos..we are humble --or are we?
Wow - having read a lot of the responses to the "Etta / Beyonce" drama! Well I agree with so much of what has been said. I had no real knowlege of the "Virgo" side of things so this was educational as well.
Etta James can not be replaced by Ms. Beyonce! They come from some different sitautions as mentioned here. I believe that Ms. James may have truely meant at least one thing that she said, also none of us will ever really know how she feels about her younger fan, Beyonce. As Ms. Fernandez stated; time, ethic and the parents involvement. I am a fan of both artist; I wish that Ms. James had of been invited to the events of the evening had that of happened to hear both this wonderful singers do this together would have been a conversation that I would have loved to have been able to have experienced.

And kudos to you Ms. Walker--the idea of BOTH of the singing would have been a great moment in history as well. Alas, Beyonce's ego would not have welcomed it--I follow Beyonce, and she did this when she took Minnie Driver's song and sang it at the Oscars. It's a pattern of theft of others talent with her. You may also want to know that her current single "I I were a Boy" was used without permisssion and the case has been settled out of court, after all what's a million to her, now that the song is "hers" - she also was accused by Toni Braxton of pre-empting "Bonnie & Clyde" with Jay-Z. What people who are spiritual and in the know realize is that basically she is a thief and vain.

Hi Irma, leave it to the intellectual to come with the real poltical stuff!--yes you are right on 1,2,3, and 4. All the more reason she should have been honored despite her raunchy ways--I love her rendition of the song--I read in Maya Angelou's biography that Billie Holiday was raunchy like that--they were friends in California, it's the tought life, the abusive men, the alcohol and the racism..go Irma.. One point I do want to make is that the Obama girls like Beyonce--though we know that the "bunny hop nasty girl dance " is not the Obama's girls list of acceptable behaviors for a young lady!!

hmm Virgos..we are humble --or are we?
I'd say we are...
Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent. Sophia Loren
We all have our imperfections. But I'm human and you know, it's important to concentrate on other qualities besides outer beauty - Beyonce Knowles
It's frustrating, because sometimes, when you are attractive, people don't acknowledge that you are talented as well. I mean, I'm a songwriter, I'm a producer, I have a strong voice, I'm a dynamic performer. - Beyonce Knowles
As for Etta, she still seems contradictory to me...
It's not about battling the original artists when I record these songs, it's about paying tribute to them. Etta James
My mother always told me, even if a song has been done a thousand times, you can still bring something of your own to it. I'd like to think I did that. Etta James
If those are her sentiments when it comes to doing other people's songs, why is she so resentful of Beyonce?
Or maybe she resents Beyonce's take on her song for the following reason:
You can't fake this music. You might be a great singer or a great musician but, in the need, that's got nothing to do with it. It's how you connect to the songs and to the history behind them. Etta James
Maryanne, with all due respect to you, and I do--Beyonce has not uttered a single solitary statement that comes from the process entitled "self-thinking.' I want to steer you to an observation that I have made--have you noticed how many pretty women are now lawyers and doctors? I have. There are a couple on this site- )(Medical doctors) the art of the public relations quip is at an all time high with Ms.Knowles. When left to her own devices she indubitably puts her foot in her mouth, time after time-. As for talent or lack there of--Marilyn Monroe ? Dorothy Dandridge? Have you heard of Vocal aerobics? I hadn't until a singer pointed it out to me,but I did know of "tricks used vocally" to pretend to give you more range etc.
As for Etta--her comments about Obama put her on my persona-non grata list!! she went tooooo far!!

I meant to add a comment on Beyonce's quotes--She worked her ass off, to produce this brand of this brown goddess--with this long flowing hair that would make her unique amongst women of color--problem: her hair can be purchased, to that end there is nothing unique about that, except deceiving millions of people into thinking that she has something that no othe entertainer of color has and it was brilliant marketing!! Tothis day--millions of people really think she has this long flowing brown hair, making her "stand out" from competitors, because hers is" biological" so she is "different"..I don't want to belabor the issue--but if you want more info I will send in private email-

I guess it's a matter of opinion... I expressed mine... Even the wittiest most intelligent women, despite their beauty, tend to put their foot in the mouths at some point in time. Everyone's human. As I said before, I'm a fan of neither, and don't follow their interviews, or their lives, other than what I hear from my friends or between flipping channels, but I don't find Beyonce's vocals horrible by any stretch of the imagination, and her persona to me is a humble one, despite what others define as profound beauty. I think her beauty is so profound because she is humble. And nowadays, a voice isn't enough to get you in the industry anyway... Producers want a pretty face, and a dance act along with it. I respect them both for their talents, and appreciate your incite... I just gotta' stick by my guns on this one... We're all entitled to our opinions, right?
Thursday, February 12th 2009 at 5:15PM
Maryanne Campbell
I don't know if you noticed in the industry that producers seem to try copy cat marketing... Beyonce with her long flowing hair, bought or self-grown, follows suit with Mariah Carey's image, or even her video look a-like partner Shakira, just like Keyshia Cole's image is reminiscent of Mary J. Blige. Who cares about her hair, she could be bald, and still beautiful, the brothers dig the body, specifically the booty, or even her abs, but it's her voice that carries some of that weight as well to make her a heavy hitter in the industry, she's doing movies such as Dream Girl's, Austin Powers, Pink Panther, and now Etta James' documentary, she even did that gospel movie with Cuba Gooding... I'm not mad at her... and I don't believe it's just her looks that have carried her this far... Her hair doesn't make her the star she is any more than it made Janet Jackson, or any other singer who has ever purchased hair extensions... and I don't need a private e-mail...
No-the hair is an issue all over the world and has been since the beginning of time and will be until all humans are bald!! lol so no the hair is an issue and no she is no goddess without the fabu lace wigs..and her carefully orchestrated tossing of hair that NO OTHER entertainer has done so it is very much an issue--she can't look as beautiful as Halle Berry with a short cropped boy cut. What booty? I saw her in New York in the Village with jeans and they were baggy around her butt because she was so thin a size 0!! heavy hitter? no her movies have all been box office flops--but that wasn'tthe thrust--the thrust was the exposure--No other entertainer has made an issue of their wigs, falls or extensions SHE stepped out there and pretended that her hair was like Shakira's--in any event she has never competed with Black women because she is on another roll--she competes with white women--in other words she thinks she is way above Black women as per her telling statement--"I wish I was Hispanic "and doing the cover song on our Spanish novelas on Univision, "saying "Shakira and I look alike" no they don't B looks like a light skinnned Black woman from around the way--yes her hair is what catapulted her--along with stealing people's work--having-Jay-Z help her--and trying to stay away from being Black as much as possible--hence her pictures for L'Oreal where she looks almost white..and since I speak French and read it I saw the comments on the L'Oreal France site..in any event that's my 2 cents worth you are entitled to your opinion--I happen to know a lot about her,and not from no darn, TMZ ! if I ever wanted to write a book woo hoo-!-which I don't because ? I don't care and couldn't care less..so thank you from relieving me from any further explanations--I am who she wishes she were in the culture-and I have real hair so I am cool..lol have a nice day!!

I say this that the only way Beyonce could use her song was that Mrs. Etta got paid. In the music industry as Lionel Richie stated, the most money is not made doing the song, it is the writing and people who pay and receive "PERMISSION", to use the song in the 1st place. That is a tribute and of course with new technology, songs are going to have additions to them. Also when the movie "Cadillac Records" was made, they had to pay for the rights to use Ms. Etta's music. Ms. Etta is making far more money, so you vent and the people that paid you to use song you are upset? My father and many other black people that made music received nothing but a one time payment, usually pennies considered to the longevity of the music. Beyonce will carry this song into the future, she gives Ms. Etta credit and credit rights are on every record, song etc. sold. And Ms. Etta gets paid. There was a statement about comments Ms. Etta made about President Obama. Maybe Ms. Etta is showing some of her personality and why she had problems in past?
Friday, February 13th 2009 at 10:30PM
WILLIAM W. HEMMANS III
Hi William ,that is possible--but I don't think she got paid. When someone covers a song the writer/publisher gets paid big time--remember the contracts of old? if your dad is of her era-they cheated the performers such as Mary Wells, and a lot of Motown lesser "stars." I will double check --but if she did not write "At Last" she gets no moolah! Written 1941 by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren ,they or their estate have the rights, so sorry Will, your argument was sound but does not apply.
You are right on Beyonce-another one of her coups..but there is something unjust about it, including ignoring Kelly Rowland who wanted to perform, hence her break with the artist/manager.
here are a few comments-

I mean its ICONIC, instead she just showed us that she is not a songwriter and that she is the biter that we all know she is. Big UP ETTA, fall back weave and butt pad wearing fake personality beyonce
NoTimeToGaze Fri, Feb 6, 2009 at 05:56 PM EST
These comments prove to me that beyonce and her dad are geniuses and she will always be on top as long as her audience remains brainless. I am dissapointed with the author of the article. Beyonce draws more attention to the dance than Etta ? Why is that ? Im sure people who would rather see Beyonce can just go on the internet. We have all seen her naked and gyrating countless times. Etta on the other hand is something to see. When since is music only about how you look. If this is so I wish someone would have told me that. I would not have 2 degrees, instead I would just open my mouth and sing if Beauty, s*x appeal and some form of fashion sense is all it takes.
Clearly Beyonce is wrong for singing her song. It is her song. If I wrote a paper in University and cited someone else's work and did not cite it then I would have to suffer the ramificiations. WEll, there are also rules in the industry.
Also, you should do a poll on how many people do not like Beyonce.
I will say it was a calculated business move to give her exposure and points to push her towards an Oscar, which is what they do--not this time--is Jennifer Hudson in the house?

Latina's say the same things about J-Lo. The more I look at her the more I have to admit J-Lo is a beautiful woman.
Ms. Sasha has emulated everyone else known for her beauty- Smart marketing thank you Tina Knowles. Her endorsements? thanks to the genius of Mr.Mathew Knowles.
No other entertainer has had their family in pivotal roles in their careers. They didn't need that much support to arrive.
Different age groups-different cultures--have a different ear for music. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Barbra Streisand. Comes to mind.
Such a fiendish pursuit of fame, ends up you know where. As for Ms. Etta--she is sickly--unhappy--but it was her signaure song. No she does not own the song, why didn't Beyonce sing something else?
Why didn't the "genius" write a song specially for Obama? no it's about brownie points towards the Oscar..I have no idea whether she will get one or not, I don't sit on the committee and not sure how payola in that industry works. "If I were a Boy" was stolen. Kelly Rowland is probably just realizing how she was used.
Who cares? I have seen Ms. Beautiful Beyonce with her real hair and well she is just as attractive as 96% of Black women, but she is not a Dorothy Dandridge classic beauty she is a round the way girl--it's all good now she married money--gd for her.k' am bored :-)

oh please --because she is a vapid, vain-human being-She damn sure ain't the most beautiful or most rich BLACK AMERICAN CELEBRITY AND NO ONE ELSE GET THIS MUCH VITRIOL! IT'S HER ATTITUDE HIDDEN BEHIND the carefully crafted persona of humility specifically created as a buffer with great detail and care. Etta doesn't owe Beyonce a da** thing. Beyonce or Sasha or whatever should thank Etta for making the song famous for her to showcase--and I saw The Bee--ooohh don't get stung by the Bee! on the trailers of "Obsession" lord help us--she is one ghetto child--soon they will have her taking speech lessons-- I am going to take this blog down--who cares????? the blog is whether Etta should object and on what basis--so let the other pretty girls sing one of Beyonce's song at the next Inaugural then what?
Thursday, February 19th 2009 at 6:31PM
Marta Fernandez
Marta I do agree with the the last part of the comment.....Etta James should of sung at the Inauguration, she is the one who brought sound to the sound. As far as Beyonce, I do not know her so I can not comment on someone who I do not know, however I think the aspect of not using the original singers/actors can be a slap in the face to some of the people who may not be so much as show business appearance (meaning the use of white actors playing Indians in a movie only because the real Indian people are too Indian). To all due respect let's not bash Beyonce or any one else, we really were not in the room when the deal was presented or eve signed.

well thanks that's all l am asking--the opinion of--I realize that it was very rude of Etta to speak about Beyonce and the President--especially since I deep 6 folks who criticize Obama--as far as bashing the Bee--I can build her up or tear her down--I do know the mojo. However my blog was about any two singers--the same scenario. I just happened to put a name because it's a real situation. Right now Etta is not on my favorites list-but that is not the question- So we are in agreement-about letting the original artist get the Kudos for their giving the song the fame. Thanks Cheryl:-)

You know let me put this to rest--This fake "hating" on Beyonce stuff--because she is rich and beautiful? really? really? really? don't let me count up the women who are black and prettier and richer ok Ms. Purcell? successful? yeah and she is one of hundreds of thousands--it's about the phoniness and the in your face game that annoys folks--people who don't have it going on are the ones who are resentful and they hide it by sucking up--the rest of us are fine, comfortable in our own skins--and we feel quite secure in our opinions and all of that "your jealous and hating is NOT WORKING" it is --what--it-is! a coverup --what you should have read were the comments on the other blog--and yeah she is so disliked that Jasmine in collabo with dad Mathews had to pull the guest visitor sign in book off Beyonceworld.com because so many people dislike her..now what. Come on give me a break zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!ad nauseaum--matter of fact hmm let me start by putting up some real black beauties and their bank--y'all need and education..that is what happens to people who limit themselves and that is exactly what her people know about Black people which they used that psych in their marketing--Etta just blurbed out--what black, white, yellow, pretty, ugly, rich and poor have stated. Get over it. Some of us won't like her and some will. So what?

LOL, Marta you are funny. Now tell us how you really feel my Goddess. :) I think that if it were not for the fact that Etta did not sing her signature song (Which I totally love) at the inauguration, none of this would be an issue. Beyonce had sung that song a number of times and given permission to do so in Cadillac Records, Etta had no problem, but for her to miss the opportunity to partake in a moment of history as this one, was just a bit more for her to handle. I think they both should have done this song, but it was the choice of the president to have this song sung and Beyonce was the artist chosen to do so.

Sorry you feel that way, "these old actors and singers who "espress" (sic) their hatred and bitterness should just crawl somewhere and die" not only shows how bitter and ugly you are, but how disrespectful you are to the elders beginning with your OWN family. no, because it is not like beyonce is moking it or doing a poor rendition of the song. if anything she should be honored and glad its not one of the less respectable female artists in the industry right now. if obama thinks beyonce is respectable enough to sing for him then she is also respectable enough to be singing the song period. we all know if he had made that decision and she wasn't seen as a respectable artist that it would be all over the news that he picked some hoodrat to sing at a professional event and of course it would all come back to its probably because he's black. so no she doesn't!

Lets try this, "Here today, gone tomorrow".Have anyone ever heard this expression before?Etta James like Aretha Franklin and Billy Holiday will live on in music forever. The songs they sang are called CLASSICS.
Remember this is the rapp, hip hop era and this song is from....
The music style of Usher is even a part of this music "throw back" so does this tell you anything about how long this 'Beyonce' period will be able to last, not to mention her BEAUTY???? The Beyonces are as good as the next public scandal...or the next money scam. S please omeone ask Will Smith how long it took him to go broke with all of those praising fans that lead him to believe wrongly that he would last pass those music $ millions he was making at THAT time!!!!Oh, I am sure the Whitney Huston makes the Beyonces look like small potatoes in fame and forturne as her family has a history of hits in the music industry.
Beyonce, is what it means to have short term pleasures for long term pain. And, why experience is the best teacher is so true and never ending....I wilh her and her fans all the best, but the causes you make will have consquences you may not want, need or like in the long term...Etta James has with stood the test of time. even with a body make over to boot.

I have owned that all of this is not done for Etta's betterment or by Etta for these reasons: 1. I do not believed that Etta got the money that she (made) earned for that song in the first place. 2. That during the time that she made this song a hit, she could not enter through the front door, sleep or sit and eat in the White club during those days of the White President that she sang this classic hit . 3. She could not even vote with out danger of being hung so what president can she claim was representing her being denied those human rights while this song made money for everyone but Etta? As, I am 66 years old and Etta is much older than me does Etta live in her own home, can she afford health care, food, etc? I have stayed away from this matter as I have no idea of any thing about Etta for over what, 45-55 years now????!!!?
