Eartha Mae Kitt was born in South Carolina January 17, 1927. Her first starring role was given to her by the great Orson Welles in 1950. He called her the most exciting woman in the world. She played Helen of Troy in the stage play Dr. Faustus, but she is probably better know for her role as Catwoman in the 1960s television series, Batman. Her first feature film was in 1958, playing opposite Sidney Poitier, in The Mark of the Hawk. Her most famous song was probably “Santa Baby” in 1953 but her first certified Gold record didn’t come until 1984 with the hit song “Where Is My Man”. This record earned her a new gay audience and in return she gave benefit concerts in support of HIV/AIDS organizations. She has been in 35 films, has written three autobiographies, and she recently won two Emmy Awards for lending her voice in the animated Disney series, The Emperor’s New School. But my favorite Eartha Kitt role was that in which she played a s*xy, coning, business woman in the movie Boomerang. She died of colorectal cancer in New York on Christmas Day. Not a bad gift for heaven…wouldn’t you say?
