Violence Prevention Specialist

General Summary

Under general supervision, performs Violence Intervention Program client intake/enrollment, represents the program in the hospital and the community, advocates and offers supportive services across many systems to individuals who have been victims of violence/ violent crime.  Additionally, the Violence Prevention Specialist I strengthens the program model by participating in community events, task forces, research components of the intervention, youth violence prevention, and other supportive aspects of service delivery. 

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks


The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Assists with active recruitment of Violence Intervention Program (VIP) clients; visits eligible patients at the bedside; serves as a liaison by providing general information and answering questions
  • Conducts intake assessments including brief psychosocial, needs assessment, and mental health screenings to identify potential service needs for patient
  • Uses mental health first aid and other crisis intervention techniques to deescalate client in times of crisis and to encourage compliance with mental health services
  • Participates in team discussions and communications regularly with staff; work closely with the rest of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that all program participants are receiving the services best suited to meet their needs.
  • Keeps timely documentation and submits statistical reports for review within given timelines, follows a set work schedule and keeps supervisor informed of daily plans and activities
  • Participates in weekly clinical supervision and team meetings with clinical supervisor
  • Collects and manages baseline and follow up data from Violence Intervention Program participants.  Enters and updates data. Establishes and maintains casefiles.
  • Helps maintain a community resource database through establishing relationships in the community, making referrals, following leads, and engaging in reciprocating services where overlap exists
  • Participates in planning and implementing annual events
  • Participates in community events as a representative of the Violence Intervention Program such as Youth Violence Prevention activities and collaborative projects
