YouTube, the video sharing website, has had an explosion of internet popularity since its access to the public in November 2005.
With our technologically driven society and YouTube's vast range of topics, this popular internet site has provided a source of audio-visual learning in the classroom.
The new generation of nursing students has subsequently used their mobile devices to rapidly retrieve information, including YouTube videos, to enhance learning in the clinical setting.
As faculty support the integration of technology, such as YouTube, into the nursing curriculum, students are able to synthesize learning through this audio-visual teaching aid on the clinical unit to reinforce procedures previously practiced in the skills lab.
Limited research exists on utilization of YouTube and its effect on learning outcomes in the clinical setting for nursing education. Faculty observed students independently watching YouTube video postings as a resource to aid them in understanding certain aspects of patient care.
The question before the faculty was, "How can YouTube impact student learning outcomes?"
