TRUE LIFE SITUATIONS: MAKING A TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR'S DINNER (433 hits)
Thousands do it without any hesitation. They go and buy the ingredients and make a traditional good luck dinner every New Year's Day. I've seen where the dinner varies, but there is one basic food that's always dressing the plate and it's "black-eyed peas! " A menu of the dinner itself might include a meat usually pork chops, or fried chicken, followed with a possible rice dish, and sweet potato and or potato salad. The sweet potato is also a part of the main course. It could be served as pie, or a "pone" or slices in a skillet. Then some have the soul meal of neck bones, okra, or ham hocks. Some cooks go all the way with serving chitterlings! As more and Black Americans are looking to do better and healthier cooking the new meal may be changing its face. Black-eye peas is a main stay, but not with all the meat in the pot. Salads could be added; and really I could take away the sweet potato but it's not in my thoughts at all. It's a true life situation eating healthier on holiday meals has got a "stretch of a challenge to beat." Not yet.
Sound delicious Miisrael. Except for the okra. And I've never had neck bones, that might take some getting used to. And I've never had chitterlings believe it or not. What are they exactly?

You're kidding? LOL! Neck bones are pretty tasty...they have lots of lean meat on the bone. Whereas; chtterlings-- well some think they are delcious boiled, and other take them fried. They are "hog's intestines!!!!" So they seem to carry the smell, even if they are perfectly clean. It's been over 20 years since I've tasted some, but growing up in the South there was no way to get out of trying them at least once. Some people call the chitlings, chittlins, or hog guts. They sprinked on the hot sauce and down the hatch!! Are your sorry you asked?
Okra can also be boiled or fried too! It's tastless, but can be slimey if they are overcooked.

My Grandma was from the deep south (Texas) and I wouldn't know the first thing about how she made cornbread but it sure was good.
