Job Search: Who you know vs what you know (181 hits)

After being downsized, I have been searching for a new position for five months. I refuse to lose faith because I know that I have real value and skills to offer a company. The downside is that more and more people are applying for the same jobs and the competition is stiffer. So I wonder if it's who you know and not what you know that are getting people back to work now. i am absolutely networking my butt off and letting everyone know that I am looking, posting my resume on job sites, on company employment sites and taking brush up workshops in computer skills. Sometimes, I wonder if this is the end of my career because it seems so hopeless at times. But I can't give up and I won't!

Hi Pamela

I had to respond, it is both! and dont give up! I am in the same boat as you. I own my own business but I had also worked full time as well. I know the Lord has our backs just keep praying and knowing our Lord will never give up on all of us.

Much love,

Shirley

Thank you Tee and Shirley. I have no intentions of ever giving up and I have definitely stepped up my networking by writing to my local politicians for their assistance. After all, my vote got THEM a job and now I need their help. And ladies, I don't think small; although I'm still waiting on some kind of response from the Mayor (that's right, I faxed him a letter too), I recently received a phone call from my state senator's office who said she received my letter and would be glad to make a call for me. I had sent my resume along with each letter so at least they can review my qualifications. I also identified a specific government agency that I had previously applied to and provided the name and phone number of the HR manager in my letter so they have all the information.

I feel it’s about time that the politicians who lobbied for our vote do something specific for us when we need them most. Also, I doubt that many people think to even contact them for help, I am not at all shy and I’m thinking way out of the box to land myself another job.

I do already own my own business. We buy and hold real estate and I have several rental properties that basically run themselves now because we have the right tenants in place who pay their rent every month, but I still like to work a full time job. Thanks so much for your comments ladies.
