ON EACH DAY OF kWANZAA A CANDLE WILL BE LIT, STARTING WITH THE BLACK (CENTER) CANDLE, AND THEN FROM LEFT (RED) TO RIGHT (GREEN) TO THE FOLLOWING SIX DAYS. THE CANDLE LIGHTING SHOULD BE A FAMILY OR COMMUNITY AFFAIR AND ALL PRESENT SHOULD PARTICIPATE AFTER THE MEAL OF THE DAY IS EATEN. DR. KARANGA DEFINES THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES AS FOLLOWS:
1st Day - Umoja (oo-m0-jah) - Unity. To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.
2nd Day - Kujiehagulia (Koo-je-cha-gu-lia) - Self Determination. To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves, instead of being defined, named, created for and spoke for by others.
3rd Day - Ujima (oo-jee-mah) - Collective Work and Responsibilities. To build and maintain our community together and make our sister's and brother's problems our problems and to solve them together.
4th Day - Ujamaa (Oo-ja-maa) - Cooperative Economics. To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.
5th Day - Nia (Ne-ah) - Purpose. To make our collective vocational building and developing our community to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
6th Day - Kuumba (Ku-um-ba) - Creativity. To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
7th Day - Imani (E-ma-ne) - Faith. To believe, with all our hearts, in our people, and our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
