One thing my generation of music lacks is true entertainers, but Sean Murray is truly one of the few. I had the honor of sitting down with him moments before he hit the stage at Apache Café in Atlanta.
Decovia: What do you think Hip Hop is missing? Sean Murray: Hip Hop is missing charisma, versatility, class…my hopes in this business is to bring more class to the table, give the people something different.
Decovia : So was Hip Hop your first love? Sean Murray: No…actually singing was. Any given day my mother would have Stevie or Donny Hathaway coming through the speakers. They inspired me to use my voice. New Edition sparked the flame that brought out the Hip Hop in me. After Bobby left I saw myself as the new member, no joke! That’s just how much I wanted to be an entertainer. But being an R&B singer didn’t pan out for me for whatever reason.
Decovia: So you’ve been on your grind for a while now. SM: Most defiantly. I’ve been performing since the early ‘90s! I’ve opened for Da Brat, MC Lyte in St. Louis, and legendary Atlanta Hip Hop group OutKast in San Diego on their Atlien promo tour just to name a few.
Decovia: This is a tough business, who or what gives you that drive everyday? SM: That’s easy. Mary J. Blige and Morgan Freeman. The things that they have over come and the hard work that they put in for their career, there’s no reason for me not to do the same. I love what I do so there’s no end in site for me.
