For Immediate Release From Kingdom-Cooling Well Ministries!

When Is Maundy Thursday 2024 And Where Does The Name Come From?

Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday.

We all know about Good Friday and Easter Sunday (https://www.standard.co.uk/topic/easter)Maundy Thursday commemorates Christís last supper with the apostles in Jerusalem before being crucified and resurrected.

The name derives from the Latin mandatum, which means ďcommandĒ.

According to St Johnís Gospel, at the meal Jesus had with his followers, he told them: ďA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.Ē, but many of us arenít aware of Maundy Thursday.

While we donít get a day off for Maundy Thursday, itís still an important date in the Christian calendar.

Itís considered the fifth day of Holy Week and is usually observed at different times by the Western and Orthodox churches.

Maundy Thursday also goes by other names including Holy Thursday, Covenant Thursday, Great and Holy Thursday, and Thursday of Mysteries.

How is Maundy Thursday celebrated?

Until 1689, it was customary for the monarch to wash worshippersí feet in Westminster Abbey.

Food and clothing were also handed out to the poor.

Nowadays, feet washing remains a tradition only in the Catholic and Armenian Apostolic Churches. On this day, masses are also held by many Anglican churches.

On Maundy Thursday, the monarch attends a Royal Maundy service at one of Britainís cathedrals or royal chapels.

Why does the monarch give out Maundy money?

During the Royal Maundy Service, men and women from all over the country are given special coins in small purses handed to them by the monarch.

These coins are designed for the occasion, and are legal tender and highly collectable.

During the service, the monarch will present each recipient with two purses: one red and one white. The white purse will contain a set of specially minted silver Maundy coins equivalent in value to the age of the monarch.

The red purse will contain two commemorative coins, symbolising the Sovereignís historic gift of food and clothing.

This year, Queen Camilla will step in for King Charles, who will miss the services as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

This day commemorates Jesus Christís last supper and the initiation of the Eucharist, which is observed in many Christian churches 12.

On Maundy Thursday, a unique tradition takes place: the monarch offers Maundy money, also known as Royal Maundy, to selected senior citizens. For each year of the monarchís age, one man and one woman receive this honor. During a special service, the monarch presents each recipient with a red and white purse. The red purse traditionally contains an allowance for clothing and provisions, while the white purse holds Maundy coins corresponding to the monarchís age 2.

In addition to this regal tradition, many church services are held in the evenings. These services often involve the blessing of oils used for sacraments. The dayís reflections typically focus on the story of the Last Supper, as recounted in the Christian Bible. Maundy Thursday also commemorates the event where Jesus washed his disciplesí feet, a powerful symbol of humility and service 2.

Although Maundy Thursday is not a public holiday in the United Kingdom, it remains a significant day for Christians. Schools, government offices, and businesses operate as usual, and public transport providers maintain their regular schedules 2.

The historical roots of Maundy Thursday trace back to the tradition of English monarchs washing the feet of the poor (previously pre-washed by the Yeoman of the Laundry) and kissing them. This custom persisted until 1689 and can be traced back to French kings performing similar acts as early as the 11th century. While the feet-washing ritual waned in enthusiasm after the reign of James II, the tradition of giving gifts of food and money endured. To this day, Englandís monarch (whether king or queen) continues the practice of distributing Maundy money on Maundy Thursday 2.

So, on March 28, 2024, let us reflect on the significance of Maundy Thursday and the timeless themes of service, sacrifice, and compassion it represents. 🙏🌟
