The Origins and Purpose of Black History Month with Alabama State University's Dr. Howard Robinson (5235 hits)

The Origins & Purpose of Black History Month
WHEN: Tuesday (Feb. 12) 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
WHERE: ASU's Levi Watkins Learning Center (ASU Library) Lecture Hall on its first-floor (off of N. University Dr.).

As the nation celebrates Black History Month, join us at Alabama State University on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in its Levi Watkins Learning Center lecture hall (ASU Library) as the University hosts a presentation titled "The Origins and Purpose of Black History Month." At this event, there will be a discussion of how Montgomery's ASU has a direct link to the birth and organizational structure of many of the most historic events of the modern civil rights movement.

One of the nation's most acclaimed and quoted civil right's historians, ASU's own Dr. Howard Robinson (ASU Archivist/Asst. Professor of History), will lead a discussion about Black History Month and show a direct connection to the movement's most pivotal events (the 1955-1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott, the 1960 Freedom Rides, the 1961 Student Sit-in Campaign, the 1965 Voting Rights Struggle and more) and Montgomery's ASU. The presentation will focus on the role played by the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and three distinct periods of the celebration of Black History Month.

The event is hosted by the Levi Watkins Learning Center's Cultural Heritage Committee and is sponsored by ASU's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture.

The event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Culpepper,

Take a look at the other side of the same coin and expand your thinking!

Black history month stirs up Black America’s emotions because we are being reminded of Black America’s horrible past to the present day of White America’s abuse and degradation of the Black American race for hundreds of years now.

Black Americans should be firmly focused on our future and not our horrible past that brings tears to my eyes. Black Americans should desire to become a sovereign people in a country of our own.
