Kick-off your Black History Month (BHM) news coverage with one of Montgomery's first observances as Alabama State University's Department of Visual Arts in coordination with other sponsors hosts the "Roots & Wings Collection Exhibition" at the University's Warren Britt Gallery in its Tullibody Fine Arts Center on Campus -- on both Friday and Saturday.
The University, in coordination with others (that are listed below), is sponsoring an opening reception on Friday and a marketplace event on Saturday with some of the very artists who have works on exhibit.
The art exhibit will be in place at ASU from Feb. 1 - Feb. 28, before its begins touring the state as part of Alabama's Bicentennial celebration.
The exhibit is free of charge and open to the public. The public is also invited to both Friday and Saturday's special events on campus, which are also complimentary.
FRIDAY'S OPENING RECEPTION & SATURDAY'S ART MARKETPLACE On Friday (Feb. 1) your news reporters are invited to cover the 5:30 p.m. opening reception at ASU's Warren Britt Gallery for the exhibition of the artwork created by Alabama artists that depicts the lives and achievements of some of Alabama's most notable African-Americans. On hand will be ASU officials, other sponsors of the event, the University's art experts and officials who can speak to your reporters on-the-record about the art and the exhibit, which can give you a good opening kick-off news story on Black History Month in the River Region.
On Saturday (Feb. 2) from 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. at ASU's Warren Britt Gallery, cover the "Roots & Wings Market Place" that features local artists, authors and artisans. Beginning at 2 p.m. there will be an "Artist Talk" in the gallery featuring several of the exhibiting artists who will speak about and answer questions concerning their artwork.
ARTWORK FEATURING AFRICAN-AMERICAN ALABAMIANS The artwork at the exhibit at ASU is about African-American Alabamians who expanded the narrative of success in professional sports, arts, politics, science, and culture, as well as those who broke barriers in education and business. It is designed to tell the story of Alabama’s rich cultural history and give recognition to some of the highest achievers who are native to the state.
ROOTS & WINGS EXHIBIT STARTS @ ASU & THEN TRAVELS THE STATE While launching at ASU in our state's capital this Friday, the Roots & Wings Collection Exhibition will travel to other cities in Alabama throughout 2019 into 2020. Celebrating Alabama’s bicentennial, the exhibit will showcase at several prominent museums, other universities, public schools, expos, events and more.
