Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones, known as Sissieretta Jones, (b.1868 – d.1933) was an American soprano. She sometimes was called "The Black Patti" in reference to Italian opera singer Adelina Patti. Jones' repertoire included grand opera, light opera, and popular music. In June 1892, she became the first African-American to sing at Carnegie Hall (called the Music Hall then) in New York. Besides the US, she toured Europe, South America, Australia, Russia, India, and southern Africa. #NBKAcademy #GothamGriots
