The Thomas C. Steward Distinguished Lecture Series

The Thomas C. Steward Distinguished Lecture Series at Alabama State University commemorates the legacy of Thomas C. Steward, a teacher and principal sent at the end of the Civil War by the American Missionary Association to Marion, Alabama in 1867 to teach the newly freed slaves of Alabama how to read and write. Shortly thereafter, in July, 1867 - nine former slaves incorporated the Lincoln School of Marion, which was the genesis of Alabama State University. Since that time, ASU has shaped minds, explored frontiers of knowledge and nurtured the intellectual endeavors among its students and the world. This Distinguished Lecture Series contributes to this mission by bringing thought provoking and entertaining icons to the campus and the Metro-Montgomery community. Becoming one and engaging discussion, the Lecture Series provides unique opportunities for student interaction, faculty discourse, and community debate with world changers.
