Clark Atlanta Professor Vernon Clarke Presents The Highwaymen Project. (18297 hits)

The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with Hammonds House Museum and Take on the Arts, hosts The Highwaymen: Legacy of a Landscape. Fueled in part by the passion of art collector and Clark Atlanta University film professor Vernon F. Clarke, this exhibition honors the artistic contribution and historical relevance of The Highwaymen an innovative ensemble of self-taught African American landscape painters founded by charismatic artist / entrepreneur Alfred Hair, in Fort Pierce, Florida in the 1950s. Birthed in the segregated South and defying Jim Crow era oppression the Highwaymen served as the catalyst to an unprecedented arts movement with an ongoing legacy that demands inclusion in American contemporary Art History. The artwork displayed in this exhibition is from the collections of Doretha Hair Truesdell (the widow of Alfred Hair) and Jimmy Stovall.

The art exhibit opened on Jan. 9th and the Highwaymen Community Dialogue is on Thursday, Feb. 9th at 7:00pm (ET).

The Dialogue will feature 3 Highway artists and will also be streamed live. I've attached the event flyer and below is the event listing in the AJC. Let's talk this week and you have a good evening.
