WHEN: Monday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, 454 Dexter Ave. Alabama State University

The 61st anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott's 'Mass Meetings' that gave birth to America's modern civil rights movement will be celebrated this upcoming Monday (Dec. 5), at the historic Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. The event is titled “The Mass Meetings of the Montgomery Bus Boycott: “Making a Movement - Changing a Nation,” and it will contain comments, gospel music and prayers, which will begin at 6 p.m.

The Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. will serve as the event’s keynote speaker and will discuss the significance of the 'Mass Meetings' to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and to the modern civil rights movement. Moss is a scholar-activist and theologian who served as a board and committee member for several influential councils and organizations during the 'movement.'

Alabama State University's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture is coordinating Monday's celebration.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Moss served as the regional director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s tenure as its president. He was co-pastor with Dr. King's father - the Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. - at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. Moss also recently served on President Obama’s White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership Council.

This event will feature performances from the River Region Mass Choir, under the direction of Gerald Williams.
