Anatomy of a Trump Supporter (3794 hits)

Obama’s policies didn’t create future Trump fans, but his presidency pushed them over the edge.
Posted Mar 31, 2016 by Natalie Denby

As it becomes increasingly likely that Donald Trump will be the Republican presidential nominee, people have begun to play the Trump blame game. The astonishing support that Trump has won for himself does demand an explanation—how could someone like Trump, a blatant s*xist, racist, and shameless provocateur, maintain such a punishing lead for so long? During a recent press conference, President Obama sharply rebutted accusations that he was responsible for Trump’s support. In one sense, Obama is right—his policies didn’t create the Donald Trump phenomenon. But the color of his skin certainly didn’t help. Indeed, the simple fact of Obama’s election as the nation’s first black president was the final straw for future Trump supporters.

The astonishing success of Obama’s 2008 campaign was what, paradoxically, set the stage for the rise of a far-right demagogue. With Obama’s soaring speeches, historic candidacy, and devoted supporters, general election turnout would prove to be shockingly high, with Democrats taking the highest percentage of the vote since 1964. Faced with such an enthusiastic liberal base, it’s hardly surprising that Republicans did what they could to increase conservative turnout.

What is surprising is that those efforts included incendiary, racist rhetoric. “Birthers” questioned the legality of Obama’s campaign with the farcical claim that he was born not in Hawaii, but in Kenya—a claim that not only flew in the face of reason but also would never have gained traction if Obama were white (and thus, by their logic, demonstrably American). The birther movement against Obama gained far more support than any challenge to either John McCain’s or Ted Cruz’s legitimacy (neither was born in the mainland U.S.). Other conspiracy theorists accused Obama of secretly being Muslim. This was a claim that no one made in earnest against any white candidates—apparently, only the black presidential candidate would lie about his faith.

Obama’s racial identity drove a huge swath of voters to question his credentials, his honesty, and his basic American-ness. That these race-based challenges were not dismissed but repeated on “mainstream” news sources and by prominent public figures validated the paranoid fear that a black presidency could only come at the expense of white America, popularizing and legitimizing the demand for a white, demonstrably devout Christian president.

Efforts to agitate voters against a black presidential candidate were born of a cynical desire to whip up the conservative vote at all costs. When certain parts of the GOP acquiesced to the inflammatory racial rhetoric creeping into the presidential campaign, it was because they believed that they had simply brought indifferent voters back into the Republican fold. Instead, they sped up the creation of a new class of voters utterly uninterested in working within any existing political framework. The voters who were told that their paranoid distrust of all things Obama was legitimate believed that they’d been vindicated. Angry, white, and middle-class, it was easy for this newly energized class of voters to blame all their troubles on the political “establishment”—meaning, first and foremost, Obama but also all of their political representatives, including the GOP.

And this is not at all surprising. The white, American middle-class has felt under siege for quite some time; according to a Pew poll, the American middle-class is shrinking steadily, and the share of white people in the middle class has dropped. Middle-class men are making fewer socioeconomic gains than women. The incomes of people with only a high school diploma have also plunged. The result: a demographic comprised largely of working class white men that feels endangered. The rhetoric of the 2008 presidential campaign not only validated this sense of victimhood, but also gave angry voters multiple targets; they felt betrayed by previous politicians (like George W. Bush), and they were certain that they would continue to be betrayed by future ones (especially Obama).

A black president was the final blow for voters whose fury had been fermenting for years. And when middle-class wages remained stagnant and the economic recovery came slowly during the Obama administration, enraged white voters believed they’d been proven right. Now a substantial segment of white, middle-class America saw themselves not only as victims, but as victims who’d been exploited and beaten down by the rest of America (anyone who didn’t belong to their demographic).

The two-term presidency of a black liberal didn’t make these voters, but it was the last in a series of events that created them. Obama wasn’t the only enemy for these voters—anyone who represented political moderation or the old Republican Party was also a threat. The idea of working with the establishment is repugnant to these voters for obvious reasons; the establishment is not entirely averse to compromise, and any compromise whatsoever is intolerable to people who are convinced that it can only come at their expense.

Unable to accept Obama or even someone like Mitt Romney as their representative, the new class of conservative voters demanded someone who actually represents their concerns, someone who isn’t a member of the “establishment,” someone willing to accept their vision of the world in terms of “us” versus “them.” Donald Trump, with his xenophobia, racism, and misogyny is perfect for the role; Trump is the incarnation of the fury that the GOP fanned and then lost control of. What critics of Trump don’t understand is that all of his would-be flaws comprise the entirety of his appeal; Trump supporters don’t want a complete, coherent policy platform or a respectable candidate. They want only a microphone for their gripes—the louder, the better. They want someone who is willing to shout from the rooftops what they’ve been muttering for years: that white America has been screwed over by everyone else, and it’s time for revenge. Immigrants? Get rid of them. Black protestors? Attack them at rallies. Familiar Republican politicians? Make childish taunts and bizarre threats. What few actual policies Trump has articulated are tailored precisely for this crowd: protectionist tariffs to shelter them from competition, anti-immigration policies to keep out people who they fear are gunning for their jobs, and high taxes on the rich to provide relief for the middle-class.

The fact that Trump’s campaign is outrageous and bad for America is irrelevant. Outrage is Trump’s barometer for success. And when he says he’s going to “make America great again,” the America he refers to is suspiciously white, old, undereducated, and furious. So is Obama to blame for Trump? In the sense that Obama looks like everything Trump supporters hate, yes. But Trump was made possible years before Obama became a household name, during the second Bush administration, when the economy tanked and Republican voters realized they were furious with their representatives. And Trump was made inevitable in 2008, not by Obama, but by his fiercest critics.

Heck, look at what most people in the world think about people with dark skin. You can't please everyone is what I say and certainly not Americans. If Mr. Trump is going to be the next US Commander in Chief alls we can do is pray that he gets some salvation and some sense. He shouldn't run the country like he ran the Apprentice. We need to stop the fear mongering because that's what people did with Pres. Obama saying he's a Muslim, a former community organizer, and that he's going to make everything about Blacks.

Mr. Trump isn't my choice for a Presidential candidate but clearly he has some skills of running a company and so why not America. He needs to broaden his knowledge of International relations, the world, and people. He can select people that know about these things but it would be great if he could demonstrate that he is intelligent by honing and toning down some of his rhetoric.

I guess if I went bankrupt SIX times, that means that he was able to keep monies from the bank that he did not earn SIX times in his career. This man never asked GOD for his own forgiveness, he is a bully, thug, he have shown disrespect for women, he flipped flopped six times on this issue and 7 out 0f 10 and 50% of the American people do not like him.

I am just thinking out aloud...

Absolutely amazing That you have no comments on the material of this great blog. Steven, you made no mention of Trumps SIX bankruptcy, WHY? This man is not for your best interest as a blue collar worker.

Is this someone you want to be, if you become wealthy?

I know you will not answer that neither.

@ Deac,

I am seeing 4 bankruptcy filings although not for him personally rather his corporations... where did you get 6 (as if 4 aren't bad enough)?

..."The Claim: “I never filed for bankruptcy,” the Republican presidential candidate said in response to a jab from competitor Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Co. who faulted Trump’s business record. “Almost everyone in Atlantic City is either in trouble or filed for bankruptcy.”
The Facts: While Trump hasn’t filed personally, his corporations sought bankruptcy protection in 1991, 1992, 2004 and 2009."...

Mr. Culpepper I asked you a question based on the blog you posted! Your response to my question was to ask a question of your own. By asking a question of your own is not answering my question Sir! You don't answer a question with another question. You answer a question with an answer!

So again, at the end of the day what is Black America's permanent solution? The only answer that you can give is what I've always been saying that our only permanent solution is that we come into a country of our own and we will.
Monday, April 11th 2016 at 5:29PM
Harry Watley
That was a question you asked? Proper punctuation would have cleared that up for me. Can we use a question mark in there somewhere instead of the exclamation point you decided to use?

Anyways, to answer your question .. if you are referring to the article that was posted by me ... but not "written" by me ... I can already deduce what you would like to hear ... that we become a sovereign nation in order to at least start to correct what is so wrong with this country. You have been preaching this since day one and your voice has been heard, though it is the decision of the reader on if they are willing to listen or not.

I think Black America needs to be a more consistent force, day and night, 365 days a year... and not only when something affects us, eg Black Lives Matter movement. I can't really tell you a permanent solution because nothing is really permanent, except matter (neither created nor destroyed theory stuff). You can create a sovereign nation, but then it becomes, how long does that last?

If you want a question answered, you need to present it as a question and not a statement.

Monday, April 11th 2016 at 7:04PM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
Mr. Culpepper,

I would like to show you how ignorant you are in a couple of different ways!

Firstly, you said had I used a question mark it would have been clear to you that I was asking a question. Now, here is the question that I asked. "Mr. Culpepper, at the end of the day what is Black America's permanent solution...." Take notice of these two words in my question (what is). WHAT IS denotes a question is being asked stupid and therefore you shouldn't have had any problems deducing that a question is being asked to you.
Let's go a step further. I asked the same question a second time. I asked, "Mr. Culpepper I asked you a question based on the blog you posted!" Take notice of these few words (I asked you a question) if you wasn't sure the first time you should have been sure the second time when I asked the same question using the words in parentheses knucklehead.
After two tries I asked you decided to address my question and to me that is absolutely stupid when you could have answered the question the first time if you didn't have something personal against me!
You said, "if you are referring to the article that was posted by me, but not written by me...." Here is where you're trying to walk away from the very blog you posted which to me shows that you have a mental disconnect. When you post someone else's blog it is just as good as if it originally came out of your mind. By posting someone else's thoughts/blog you are supporting this persons mindset 100%.
At this point you are beginning to do some elementary analytical thinking and rational reasoning, but it is elementary when you said this, "I can already deduce what you would like to hear....that we become a sovereign nation....."
You know as well as I know that sovereignty in a country of our own is our only permanent solution and you don't want to buy into it because you don't have the goodwill to admit that I am right!
Then you completely go off track and become stupid again when you said this, "I think black America needs to be a more consistent force..."
Black Americans being a consistent force is not an answer to my question knucklehead. The only answer to my question is YES that sovereignty in our own country is our only permanent solution.
Lastly, you said that if I want a question answered I need to present it as a question and not as a statement! Idiot, it was posed as a question but you didn't have the intelligence enough to figure it out idiot!

You have earned these derogatory names I have called you out of LOVE since you are one of my people dummy!

Monday, April 11th 2016 at 10:00PM
Harry Watley
First, allow me to retort. You CAN use the phrase "what is" in a sentence and it not be a question. For example, the sentence, "That comment you submitted is what is wrong with this site currently." There is no question being presented, but I used your "what is" phrase that you denoted as a phrase that asks a question.

Second, no love is shown when you call other people names as you have. I do not feel any love (and more importantly no respect) from anything that you stated. So I do not accept your "out of love" theory. You are a grown man and you should know how to respect people and educate them at the same time, but you have failed miserably in this post.

Third, if I posted something about a murder of an innocent child, does that mean I support murder? If I post something regarding how the reasoning of the government increasing taxes, does this mean I support it? The answer is no Harry. It is called "being informed." Not only do people need to know about all the good stuff happening, but also the bad. Not only do people need to know things about Black America, they need to be informed about White Anetica, Asian America, Latino America, etc. to say to everyone in the entire world that if you repost something or share something that is not your own, that you support it as if you wrote it is 100 percent .BS

So, again, when you want to argue a point, please be respectful of others. I have no issue with you arguing a point or getting into a discussion, just be respectful.

Great points Brother Reggie Culpepper. If a person is asking a question, why should the reader guess or assume what the writer is trying to say. If one is asking a question, then the author should use the tools of English available to them, when expressing one's self, this is common practice.

Mr. Culpepper,

This will be my last comment on this talking point of recognizing a question because you will go on and on since you do not have the intelligence to recognize a question from a statement.

You don't see so I will show you if I can that the example you gave, "that comment you submitted is what is wrong with this site currently" is not asking a question. It is a declaratory sentence!

The declaratory sentence you gave as your example of a question is exposing what is currently wrong with this site.

My question to you read like this, what is Black America's only permanent solution! I am asking the the unknown. The unknown is a permanent solution! I gave our only permanent solution which is sovereignty in a country of our own. The solution you gave is that Black America needs to be consistent and consistency has not gotten us anywhere in 500 years.
Black America needs real estate/a country of our own. That is the only way Black America can move forward. By having a country automatically unites us and being united we have strength to take care of ourselves and our country and what's left over we can help other countries not doing as well as we are doing. This is the path that God has put us on through me Black America's first genuine prophet.

Here is my take on your concept of respect. Respect works both ways; from me to you and from you to me. I am not getting any respect from you because you are a fu*king dummy when you don't instinctively know the difference between a question and a statement.

What it is about you is that you were trying to be a SMARTASS avoiding agreeing with me which would psychologically deflate your ego.

What makes us stupid is that we all think we are smarter than the next Black American person. We are not intelligent enough that only one of us is the most intelligent of all of us and that one is me. You have seen it play out on other sites that I was on and then terminated.

Who would have ever thought that a single Black American man could show that Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam is wrong! But, I did by simply introducing the thought path that since prophets so racially different ignorant Elijah was wrong to align himself with anything of the Arabian people!

So this will be my last comment on this talking point of what is a question and to highlight that consistency knucklehead is not our permanent solution. Our permanent solution is to have a country of our own which may be something that you all think is impossible to happen but I don't think so!
Tuesday, April 12th 2016 at 11:37PM
Harry Watley
Well, thank goodness you won't be making any more comments on this post.

"The solution you gave is that Black America needs to be consistent and consistency has not gotten us anywhere in 500 years. "

Are you saying that we were consistent for 500 years straight? We had some moments, but to say for 500 years, that we have been consistent is not what I agree with. But I cannot say that we have done nothing in 500 years either. Between now and back when we were first bought over here, I think tremendous strides have been made. But where would we have been if we were REALLY consistent ... I mean .. REALLY consistent?

In order to get respect, you first have to give it Harry. You did neither. You first call me a "whiner" ... then you called me other names that I am not going to repeat ... blah blah blah ... don't expect anything if you give nothing. I feel like I'm talking to a child now and you are a grown man. What's up with that?

I was not trying to be a "smartass" as you put it, because I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU. I typically never do. It is my right to do so and because people do not agree with you is not a hallway pass to berate and start name-calling. I honestly did not know you were asking a question, I thought you were making a sarcastic (declaratory) statement, thus prompting my initial comment to you. You are well known on the site for doing that, so I would not put it past you to do that.

AND, this is your last warning from me. Please show respect on the site. I do not think it is that hard especially for someone as smart as you ... you are the most intelligent person on this site, right? No need for proper punctuation, because that's how intelligent people roll. Call people names because that is what intelligent people are supposed to do. Think everyone else is stupid because, hey, you're the only one here with enough intellect to form complete thoughts and sentences. Heck, you should run for president, get rid of congress, get rid of the checks-and-balances in place, and run you a dictatorship here in the US and make us the nation that you want. What say you? I'll be looking for your name on the ballot this fall.

Wednesday, April 13th 2016 at 8:16AM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
Mr. Culpepper,

I'll say it again! I don't call people names. When I see for myself that the person is being a smartass I would first call the person a knucklehead then I would up it to ignorant then it's upped to stupid and lastly idiot! I am grading the individual as a teacher would grade a student from an A to an F. Since I am your prophet I am also your teacher!
Knucklehead is a B -, ignorant is a C -, stupid is a D -, and idiot is an F! Not one I have spoken to in eight years of my anointed is worthy of in A.

I realize that God do not send prophets to intelligent people. God sends prophets to dumb and ignorant people. The divine task of the prophet is to instill intelligence in his people.

You are difficult to deal with because you are a smartass only when it comes to me. That tells me you are very envious and jealous of me and you shouldn't be because I came to save you and give you a better life!

Any simpleminded idiot would know, but you didn't know that nothing trumps us Black Americans descendent of plantation slaves having a country of our own then here under the rules and laws of White America our former slave masters. You are very envious and jealous of me that you wasn't the one to think of this solution, but I did. God gave it to me and God will bring it to pass in my lifetime and I am 71

Here is another example of why I call you an idiot.
STATEMENT-A Wednesday, April 13th 2016 at 2:32AM you made this statement, "Are you saying that we were consistent for 500 years straight? We had some moments, but to say for 500 years, that we have been consistent is not what I agree with."

STATEMENT-B Monday, April 11th 2016 at 6:28PM you made this statement, "I think Black America needs to be a more consistent force, day and night, 365 days a year..."

In Statement A you are denying that you proposed Black America's permanent solution is to be consistent! Again, nothing will work except having a country of our own.

It is difficult dealing with you since you can't keep up with the things you say! You are a young man but have the mind of an old man with dementia. Since you are young man and can't keep up with the things you say qualifies you to be an idiot!

Let me point out something else.
In Statement C Wednesday, April 13th 2016 at 2:32AM you said this, "Well, thank goodness you won't be making any more comments on this post."
In Statement D Tuesday, April 12th 2016 at 11:37PM I said this, "This will be my last comment on this talking point of recognizing a question because you will go on and on since you do not have the intelligence to recognize a question from a statement."

If you notice, you are mis-interpurting the things that are being said! It is diffcult to deal with you because you can not think analytical and reason rationally!

I don't want to continue arguing with you since you made it plan that anything coming from me you will not accept even when I am absolutely RIGHT. It is envious and jealousy that possessses you only when it comes to me! You need special help!

You made absolutely ZERO (no) points in what you stated. Your first paragraph is laughable and you totally contradict yourself.

Your second paragraph is laughable too, since you call yourself a prophet.

Third and fourth, LOL

Now on to your "STATEMENTS" comments. I told you nothing is permanent, (maybe except matter) in my previous comments, lest you forgot. You asked what can be a permanent solution, well I gave you an answer that I thought could help in becoming close to a solution. I never denied that I proposed that. I never said it was permanent either.

Please do what you preach, and read (well) before you react/respond (in your words, think analytical and reason rationally). I never said anything about a permanent solution, because I do not think there is one ... even being a sovereign nation is not permanent. Even if we went out and discovered a whole new planet and went there to colonize it and all of Black America went there .... it STILL would not solve any issues because those same issues will arise in some form or another. You think if there was a planet full of Black Americans, that there would be no discrimination or prejudice? Water, ice, steam ... it's all H2O no matter what you do to it, just different forms.

Your last paragraph is a laugher as well.
